I'm considering buying this coin but I don't want to pay too much and the seller seems to be asking a little more than I would like to pay and what I found similar coins going for. I know the toning adds some value but I don't think it should be as much as he wants. What do you think of the coin and what do you think it's worth? Thank you for your time and opinions.
I don't really think that the toning is very attractive. If you are on the fence now, pass and find another.
I actually think the toning is attractive. But I agree for the others, I wouldn't even pay half that price (MAYBE $100 if the toning is really stunning)
63 RB & BN are going from $40 to $85 on Heritage and then 2 ANACS at $200?!?!? Those prices are for untoned examples. The premium for toning is pretty much up to the buyer, but I think you will find >$200 would generally be considered excessive for that coin.
The seller is not trying to rip anyone off. He is merely charging a premium for the toning. That color is not common on MS IHC's. My first impression was 3X price guide which is exactly where the seller has the coin priced.
I mean maybe, but $219 is too much for a indian head cent even WITH toning. If the coin is worth around $50 the toning would probably only be another $20.
Leave it be. You can do better than this price. I just bought a wonderfully toned 1868 right at greysheet bid in a PCGS MS64RB holder ($450). If you wait around long enough, you can find very pretty coins at very reasonable prices.
Just as an FYI.....the person selling it bought it on teletrade for $65. http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=3243&lot=1124#n
The problem with evaluating toning is that it is very subjective. I have no problem with this seller offering the coin at 3X bid. I don't think he will get that price but I don't think he is ripping anyone off by asking that much. It is very rare to find IHC's with attractive toning. Likewise, it is hard to find IHC collectors who are interested in that type of toning. Most people looking for toned IHC's are toning enthusiasts like myself looking for a type coin. I think the seller would do better to have a BIN with Best Offer Option.
Pass. Seriously, you can find a more attractively toned one for that price. I wouldn't pay much more than $60 for that one.
IMO, you cannot put a "book value" on toning. There are some collectors who appreciate it, there are some who don't mind it, there are some who avoid it, and some who despise it- and collectors between all of those. It's impossible to quantify the value toning adds because each coin is unique, as is each what each collector find attractive. The marketplace will always determine what the coin should sell for. At $219, I'd be suprised if this coin sold. FWIW, the violet on this cent is interesting, but not my cup of tea. I prefer nice chocolate surfaces when shopping for BN IHCs.
