I found this half dollar the other day and it looked strange and i was just wanting some opinions on what could have caused it.
the obverse looks off by just a little bit, but not enough to command a premium, just a worn 1983 half dollar.
MAD (misaligned die). The reverse die is reasonably centered but the obverse die is misaligned. Interesting but little or no premium (especially in that condition).
So if both of them are off the same amount, then it's off-center, but if one is off then it's misaligned. Is that right?
If they are off in the same direction AND part of the design is off the edge of the coin (missing) THEN it is an offcenter. Although it is unusual it is possible for both dies to be misaligned. The anvil die can not be far off though since it fits inside the collar. IF both sides are off the same amount in the same direction but all of the design is present then it is most likely an uncentered broadstrike.
