I'm hoping people can help me with these two coins. I bought them because I hadn't seen these types before, but I also don't know what they are. The Arabic one is in bad shape and I kind of wish I hadn't bought it, but since I did I'd like to know what it is.
Good luck HD on trying to figure out the date on the Thai coin. I have several of these and I always seem to mess up the dates. The kind of cursive numerical style on this type doesn't really match up with what Krause has. If you have cracked it, let me know. I'd like to correctly date these coins. Thx, Joe Here's mine from another post: 1920? 1921? 1937?
I have trouble with these as well. Is the date written on these coins? If so, I can have my wife read them when I get home tonight.
If you know now to convert from Buddhist dates to current dates. Just FYI, I cheat and remember my mother in law was born in Buddhist year 2500, 1957 AD.
Did you know the number 5 was pronounced "ha", so if you are chatting with a Thai person and they type 555 they are just laughing?
Using that chart and referencing Krause, I think mine is a 1942, but the Thai 4 and 5 are almost identical and it's very small on the coin. Krause isn't helpful by giving a picture of a coin with a hole in it and then in the notes saying "no hole." Then why show one?
My verson of Krause shows Y54 which has a hole, and below it lists Y57 with no picture which doesn't have a hole and uses BE in the date, which yours does.
My wife confirmed 1942 for HD, 1920, and 1937. She couldn't read the coin you thought was 1921 Jhblonde, sorry.
Thanks Medoraman. The problem is on early 20th century Thai coins is that the dates are somewhat stylized and difficult, for me at least to match them with the chart in the Krause book or even some that I've found online. We do the same thing:
