I found this Planchet while looking through my great-great-uncles house. His house if pre-WW2 and the house next to his (that he also owns) is early 1800's. I don't know where he got this coin except I found it in a table next to his bed that he took all the knobs off the cabinets so no one could get in them ;) I also found standing Liberties and a Large cent with this coin in a box that was locked inside the cabinet.
Just hoping for your opinions on what this might be and what it might be worth. (I haven't weighed it yet because I don't have a scale :( )

I would love to know as well! I know a dealer who has one exactly like it in his display case. He says it's a Susan B Anthony blank. When I asked why or how it could be gold toned, he didn't know. He's selling it for $45.

It would be called a blank if it is genuine. It would not be called a planchet until it has gone through the upsetting mill, but from past experience, you might not be able to have this blank authenticated. I have a copper blank that appears to be a dime, both in size and weight, and there is no way to prove that it came from the Mint.

    Good luck!

I just noticed that your specimen looks a tad larger than the quarter. Do you have a set of calipers to measure it?

    You should also weigh it.:thumb:

It measured to be just over 24mm (probably 24.3-which is what a quarter would be) could this be the *blank for a quarter? It looks like copper... could it possibly be a half cent because it didn't go through the mill yet wouldn't that mean that it might still be a bit larger the what it would be after it goes through the upsetting? (The next step is getting it weighted )

Canadian large pennies come in at 25.4 - closest i can think of.

well, 24.3 is the exact diameter of a US quarter from 1828 to present.

here is a great site that categorizes coins by diameter. very informative (and i have no ties to the site) http://www.air-tites.com/coin_size_chart.htm

A metal disc, possibly a byproduct of some sort of fabrication.
