Hey ! I have a really great MS 1962 quarter. Only problem is, is that I can see a partial finger print on the obverse. (not mine). Anyway, I am wondering if there is a safe way to remove the print without damage to the whole coin.

Acetone but i dont think it works for old finger prints other than that i really dont know. If you decide to go the acetone route i suggest you do a search and learn the proper procedures.

Use 100% acetone not fingernail polish remover and give it a quick dip. If this does not remove it, it may be too old of a finger print to remove.

Rubbing Alcohol or Acetone. Neither should harm the coin, take care not to wipe the surface of the coin.

If it is an old print then neither acetone nor rubbing alcohol is likely to remove it. You can try but it probably won't work. Your only real hope is probably going to be a commercial acid based dip.

just leave it alone. odds are it won't come off anyway without harming the coin. I have an '09 penny ms64rd that has a fingerprint just to the right of Lincoln and think it's cool. from the first guy to have the coin 100yrs ago?

Thanks for the replys. I think I will just leave it alone. To me it's to nice of a coin to mess up any more.

Nothing will remove that print Dave. It's etched in the metal and therefore now part of the coins landscape. Might o' had a chance of removing it back in '62 but not today. Let's run that print through AFIS and see if we can 'bag' the culprit......:)
