1879 P Morgan Rainbow - MS65 Star NGC Holder

Bought this years ago for full MS64 ask and got a favorable grade out of it for sure.! Never have been able to price it.

I'd have to say this coin is easily valued around 1k in my opinion. Some might pay more with the toning and it's stabbed but I don't factor or pay premiums in the end value for myself.

How much did you pay if you don't mind me asking?

 

Rodeo- Offers of $1000 are what I mostly get. Thanks for the spot on comment about it being slabbed and what you pay. I do pay a premium myself for good color, but it is often impossible to find, given how picky I am about it.

I paid $200 plus another $50 +/- to have it slabbed by NGC. I was hoping for at least MS65 I have friends wanting me to send it to PCGS before they buy it. Another downside to the endless TPG cycle! Everyone likes the coin but now NGC is somehow a leper???

 

Sad but true. You will almost always get more $$$ for the same grade if your coin is in a PCGS holder.

 

I'm learning that more and more! Wonder why? The worst thing to happen is one TPG defeating the other to the point where there is only one superpower.

 

Why would NGC be considered a leper? If anything, I find the NGC value guides to be much more conservative and realistic than PCGS pricing guides. If people really are saying that, then they are not practicing the the art of "buying the coin and not the holder."

 

I wish that was my coin... I have a toned 1902 MS-63 morgan which the whole front is a nice green color, and the reverse has a cool rainbow effect around the whole edge of the coin. Are there any premiums for coins with really nice, full toning on both sides?

 

Also, i believe that the NGC's holders look more professional, in my opinion, PCGS just looks like plastic with a slip of paper in it NGC looks like you get a better holder.

 

Absolutely, toning on both sides, if natural, makes the coin even better! Post some pics of it please!.

 

Totally agree, feels far more 'archival quality'.

 

Here are the best picture i could take, its a blueish rim around the reverse, on the front it's also a blueish green color. Premium ?

I'd price this between $100-$130 depending how it looks in hand, assuming I was looking to buy it to hold on to. The reverse toning is probably the better price support, but the market wants the toned obverse to carry the coin.

 

O.K. Thanks, the coin is originally worth $126(without toning) because it is a better grade and date... so with the toning what would it be worth??

 

Probably $150-160, but could also go for $130 on ebay (I suspect no lower than that). The toning is decent but not super nice like collectors are looking for. Or it is and I can't tell from the photos!

I might stretch that to a 65. The star is the toning. Paul can tell you more on that. Its still like to see a real close up head on. Based on the initial photo, i was thinking there is no way it is even a 64. But it looks like the marks i was viewing were largely surface marks. There are a couple of clinks in the rim though, as well. Where is Doug? I trust Doug.

 

Toning value depends on the collector. Speaking for myself, I don't pay any premium for toning so it's worth $126 with no added value.
