I have a number of loupes, all of good quality, but have trouble with them. I wear glasses. Using a loupe is a pain because I must remove my glasses to use it then put them back on to do anything else. I was looking at eyeglass loupes, the kind that you clamp to your frames, as well as the visor types that you can wear over your glasses and flip them up and down as needed. Do you use anything like this? Can you give recommendations? Pros and cons of various styles? Thanks for your help.
I wear glasses too, and I don't have to take mine off to use a loupe. I just move the coin closer or further away until it focuses. No problem at all for me. Of course maybe your vision problem is the opposite of mine, near vs far I mean. Or maybe you're trying to use a loupe that is too strong. I dunno, just talking out possibilities.
I too wear glasses. I do the same thing that GDJMSP described. At time, I do wear contacts, but I find it is harder for tired eyes to focus on the coin through the loupe when I have contacts in. My loupe is a B&L 10X.
That depends on what you want to do with the loupe. For general perusal and for grading, you want one of these - Baush & Lomb 5x packette. They have the largest field of view available of any quality loupe. And that's what you want so you can see as much of the coin at the same time as possible. http://www.jpscorner.com/Magnifiers_and_Loupes.htm If you want to be able to identify varieties or verify authentication, then you'll want one of those with greater magnification, say 10x to 20x. But very rarely would you need anything stronger than that.
I use a baush & lomb 20x hastings for errors and varieties. I need to aquire a good quality 5x- 10x for grading and general viewing cause the ones I have are junk. Quality definitely trumps saving a couple bucks. My 20x has a field of view the size of a BIC pen cap if u are wondering...
