I'm new at this, but I'm trying to start collecting Irish coins. Where is the best place to start? There is only one coin shop where I just moved to and they don't have any really. I found one once looking through half dollars, but thats it. Any suggestions for a new collector?

Find a coin show you can go to. Maybe the dealers will have the irish coins or you can look through the cheap bins and see what you can find. Also you can go to ebay and see what they have.

Plus I really like that avatar. Very creative. :smile

Are you just trying to get any and all or specific ones? I've been trying to get all Irish coins myself, which is actually doable since they have only been making coins since 1928, and many years had no coins issued (There are some much earlier coins but I'm not including those). If you don't have any and your local shop doesn't have them, I'd advise you get started by buying lots on eBay. Find someone selling six or seven coins in a group, get a couple of those and that will give you a big boost. Then you can fill in the dates you don't have buying individually. A word of caution: The farthings and half crowns get pricey. Irish coins all have fairly low mintages, many less than a million.

Hey thanks for the tips! I will have to start looking. I actually just found some today, but they are all the same coin and same year. (1974- 1p)

I`ve just completed my decimal collection of Irish coins,
I would say eBay is a good start I often see Americans selling bulk lots of Irish coins mainly pennies though.
I might put an ad in the for sale section,to try and clear out a bit.

    Also :welcome:

The Elusive Spondulix (Coin Dealer) specializes in Irish coinage. I believe this is the dealer's Website:

Here are a couple Irish coins that came my way this weekend. One was cheap & the other was not. :rollling:

You'll have to be somewhat patient because Irish coins don't come up on eBay in the quantities that coins of some other countries do. And a lot of the ones you'll see listed on there are the same listings that keep rolling over because they are overpriced. There are a few exceptions, but for most of them if they aren't silver or of a really low mintage, you shouldn't be paying more than a dollar or two. Sometimes one seller will come on and list a whole bunch of them at once, and you can combine shipping and get a bunch that way. I got about 20 coins from the same person and really built my collection that way. But check back every few days and deals will come along.

    Hello Hiddendragon,

    Thanks for the Weblink!

Check -out this other Irish coin I purchased this weekend. It looks like your avatar.:) Mine has some scuffs & such but the price was OK. The dealer had it marked $35 and he ended up selling it for about 1/3 less.

Is there a story behind the melting of this coin's total mintage?

When the price of silver was higher than the value of the coin itself (coins face value was 10 shillings), so the government melted down about 1,250,000 (off top of my head) after that there 750,000 left, but maybe between private melting etc there may be a few more missing (few thousand?).
So a fairly similar story to the 1933 Double Eagle ,I think?
I would say you got a very good price I payed about $30 for mine, if you were to buy them from the "Dublin Mint office" they cost $170 :rollling:

really depends on what you want? i had a collection of irish coins from the hiberno/norse issues right up to euro's including all the local issues from the 17th and 18th centuries. i think a good place to start is by trying to build a clloection of halpennies and pennies from charles II to william IV, they are relatively easy to find and are a good starting block.

I have collected all areas of Irish coinage from the Hiberno-Norse on up to the Saorstat era coins. As Hiddendragon has stated, they are difficult to find in quantities though. I would love to buy up bags of predecimal coins, but have only seen a quantity of 100 pennies just once in ten years. For the past few years I have concentrated my interests into the 17th and early 18th century patent coinages.

I got some of these today at a dealer:
    Ireland 1P for $0.05
    Ireland 2P for $0.10
    Ireland Punt (1990) for $1.00

What is the best place to get older Silver Ireland Coins?
