    Nope, Cheaper on E-Bay:

    1883-CC Morgan Dollar NGC MS64 E-Bay $190

The 1943-S Walkers seem to be $20 cheaper than the lowest priced ones on E-Bay. In fairness however, the coins you showed are dreck, especially the last one. By your grading, the second one is AU, isn't it?

It isn't a general rule, it is your opinion. And if you would present it that way, you wouldn't hear a peep out of me!

I disagree with both of you. I thought 67 was considered superb gem. ;)

Since you were both wrong, hug it out and make friends, ok?

Like I said in my post Paul, I didn't search through things like you did. I pulled up a search and took examples from the first page. You see, I don't disagree at all that if you look hard enough that you can probably one or two coins that are cheaper on ebay. But you will also find 10, 20 or a 100 that are more expensive than you can find elsewhere. And that's the point of the whole discussion. That's what you said was a ridiculous claim of mine.

Well, I've shown that it isn't a ridiculous claim at all, instead what I said is quite true. Most of the time you can find a better price for a coin than you can on ebay. Eay's not the place it used to be, and it hasn't been for quite some time. In fact if you went back far enough into the forum archives you'd find a very similar discussion to this one about 5 or 6 years ago. And even back then ebay was more often than not more expensive than other places.

The purpose of my comments Paul are to show people that, to make them aware. Unlike you, I could care less about proving you wrong. What I care about is other people, other collectors, who have the mistaken impression that they can get the best deals on ebay - as a general rule.

And even you will agree, that unless a collector really knows his coins, ebay is like walking through a mine field with a blindfold on. There are better places, and less expensive places, for a collector to buy coins than ebay - far better. And people deserve to know that. But unless someone shows them, they won't know it.

Now Doug, If you had posted this as your first post instead of (below)

you probably would not have gotten an argument from me. I buy most of my coins from Heritage and it is a much better place to buy certified coins. You get quality photographs, quality descriptions, pricing and auction history information in each listing, and you don't have to worry at all about reputation or being ripped off. Compared to Heritage, you are absolutely right, E-Bay is "like walking through a mine field with a blindfold on". I would also agree that for most part, Heritage prices rival that of the lower priced stuff on E-Bay. You certainly don't see the moon money BIN's like you do on E-Bay and the auction fever that seems rampant on E-Bay seems secluded to hard to find or toned pieces in signature sales on Heritage. A specific 1945-P Jefferson Nickel comes to mind.

Now you may think that I argue with you just for the sake of arguing. Nothing can be further from the truth. You have a wealth of knowledge about coins. In fact, I credit you for giving me the most important advice I have ever received about collecting coins. If you recall, shortly after I joined Cointalk, you cautioned me strongly about simply buying coins bases solely on color while sacrificing the other elements of grading in the process. I have followed that advice and it has served me well over the years.

The reason I argue with you is because you have a habit of just shooting from the hip rather than sharing your knowledge. If you don't recognize the difference between your first post in this thread and your last, then I really don't know what to say. I know it is tough after 30,000 posts to keep typing the same advice month after month, year after year, but if you are going to give advice, your readers deserve the educated version, not the condensed version.

    Hello

It might be that dealers can find good coins for less money, but the sheer size of the selections on Heritage, and the auction information, makes it a compelling venue. ebay we can all live without.

Ebay is the WalMart of the coin buying world. Unspectacular customer service, subpar quality products, and the sellers get shanked by unscrupulous buyers who are out to do dishonesty. And vice versa. Sounds like wally world to me. The only difference is that the old guy doesn't greet you at the front door ;)

When I wrote "live", I meant "in-person" like Stacks, Heritage (except for internet), Goldberg's, etc., not virtual (internet) auctions. sorry for the confusion.

Okay, we have a new bar for the 1943-S Jefferson Nickel NGC MS67. Wensy.com apparently has good prices. Unfortunately, you get what you pay for!

So if E-Bay is Walmart, what is Wensy?

Yes, if you were out sniped, someone bid over your limit. While it is frustrating, that is the name of the game. Make your best bid, whether it is by highest bid at whatever time, or snipe. Don't regret losing, because it means someone else was willing to pay more than you were.

TO badly paraphrase Star Wars, (I am not a SW geek, just remember this line), there is always another coin. Sometimes you can really get wrapped up in HAVING to have a certain coin, but trust me, after 35 years of collecting the one thing I truly know is there will always be another "must have" coin around the corner.
