I agree with that! CoinTalk has been inundated with mundane threads lately. (Perhaps that will change due to a recent banishment.)

It hurts me just thinking about it...looks like david lawrance has the "last" graded 65 for sale on ebay for $9,800 as the certification number is 25533733, one less than your certification #...

Paul I could tell ya stories that would make you feel as if you got off easy, lucky even.

But your incident is a good example of why collectors need to sell a coin now and then. The things you learn from selling teach you far more than you ever learn from buying.

Yikes. You've got me looking through -MY- raw Jeffies for THIS variety, that's for sure.

That is interesting. I've always felt guilty selling any collectable.

When I read the title of this thread - 'Ever Been a Crackout Victim?' - I thought it was going to be about cracking out a coin and either getting a No Grade (counterfeit, cleaned, altered surfaces) or a lower grade upon resubmission.

It seems there are people who make a living at this. Or those that spend there lives breaking up proof sets in pursuit of an MS70 coins.

Better than what I thought at first. I thought it was going to be a thread on Crack Addiction.

If a person ever gets a MS70 from a proof set, it will be a lifetime event for sure.

At least someone understood my intentions, thanks Porsche!

@CoinGeezer, if I wanted sympathy, I would have told a whole bunch of poker bad beat stories, not a coin story. Sorry it came off that way, it was not my intention.

    Hello Lehigh,

    Thanks for the great post!

I think the TPG bumped it up because of the coin’s rarity AND provenance. The coin graders must have recognized the Lehigh collection provenance :smile

I was offered a 1912-S nickel in MS64 that I felt would upgrade to a lock 65. The coin did get a MS65 after crack-out. Unfortunately for me, I'm not the one that bought it or cracked it. Hind-sight is always 20-20.

FWIW - if your a US collector and not used to seeing what Ancient Coins can bring, I think this thread is worth viewing for just about everyone. It has fantastic coins in it and good write ups.

I know I'm beating a dead horse here...no reason to remind me.

Wow a $900 loss is a big pill to swallow. Worse is that you sold some of your prized pieces.

Cracking out is very risky, so many variables to consider. Not all graders grade the same and the same grader may not grade the coin the same way twice. I have to be pretty confident of an upgrade to do a crackout, and I am still only about 40% or so successful in getting an upgrade.

thi's hasn't happended to me yet, but I do have a few coins that I would be afraid to crack out and resubmit for fear of a LOWER grade!

I think I should get some sympathy because I am not in Lehighs will :(
