For 1820 that is an amazing coin. Look at US coins of that period. I think Ole george went crazy by this time.
Pretty poor condition. Byzantines even in the best condition need understanding of the nature of the art. Their art was intentionally minimalistic, trying to not emphasize the humanness of the emperor, but his spiritual self. As such, they were not trying to portray reality, but the soul. Not knowing that, I fully agree Byzantine art is a step down from Greek and Roman artwork. Chris

Well, they must have been trying to portray his soul as an evil demon then because that looks like it is right out of the Movie "The Golden child"
THIS shrikes me as weird. The museum link identifies the coin to the dates 668-685 AD which would make it Constantine IV but they do not bother to identify the coin to ruler leaving it as just Byzantine culture. They spend a line telling who donated the coin in 1904 but consider the place of an art museum to stop short of educating us on history. Constantine IV is later than what we think of even as the better art in the Byzantine period so this coin is not typical even of the reduced expectations mentioned above. I don't like fighting over whose art period is finer since we will each have our opinions on whether there is merit in each period. Byzantine continued to develop and become less representational until at the end portraits were made with the fewest possible lines. My John VIII below is late-late Byzantine and typical for its 15th century time. Crude? Ugly? No, just 15th century Byzantine.
Actually, they usually seem to be pretty good art that, but they just don't seem that interested in coins and they have thousands of them not being displayed if the archive is correct.
Castor and Pollux were two people, thus two faces. The inversion is merely an interesting artistic interpretation of their brotherhood. I thought you were into "modern" art and interpretation?

That's why I answered your question. Yes, but my actual majors were archaeology and history. Classical studies was merely a minor, so I didn't do much with languages. I can't read Greek at all, but I can read Latin well enough to stumble through most of the classics.
If I may interrupt the bickering, I still prefer the theory that the heads are the rising and setting sun but do recognize that some feel Castor and Pollux is correct. Others have said it is the Danube river (ISTER in Greek) which was said to flow both north and south. Today that answer appeals to me but I change my mind frequently.
