The title says it all. I paid a smidgeon over $2 per mercury dime after seeing 2 in the 1942/1941 slots. They're supposed to arrive tomorrow morning, but the suspense is driving me crazy. I don't even have a question to pose. I just need someone to distract me while I wait out the next 15 hrs & hope that at least one is a legit 42/41... I'm willing to do a quick flip on the others if anyone on here collects mercs.
LOL... Most likely, but I got that 1794 large cent for free in a grouping like this, so I still have hope. I try to pay silver melt and then hope something good comes out of the rest. (Sadly, I usually just end up with melt...)
Thanks guys. They just arrived about 15 min. ago. I just got the 2 good ones out of the holder and into 2 x 2's. The 1942/1 D looks to be an overdate, but the condition is only so-so... (diagonal bands still visible, but very worn..hair pretty worn, but still a little definition.) The 1942/1 however is definitely AU+ and looks very pretty. It's weird though and not like the book pics... I'm going to try to get some pics uploaded because I don't know what to make of it right now. The rest of the coins are a hodgepodge...lots of AU-BU's after the late 1920's, but the early dimes are very worn. I don't typically collect mercs and don't really want to, so these may go right back up for sale. At the very least I think I got 1 legit, but worn overdate and 1 coin to obsessively research.
There's not a lot to see yet, but here's the cleaner 1942 dime. It's definitely not the book version of the overdate, but the 4 has the strange step like thing that goes up and to the right, there is a skinny line between the 4 & 2 and the right hand side of the 1 & the 9 show a tiny bit of doubling. It's not the overdate shown on PCGS though, so I'm guessing that means there's another explanation. Here are some of the 1942-D coin. I'll keep working on better pics. This Celestron hasn't been the easiest to work with. I saw someone mention that it's sometimes best to dip these in acetone to make the "1" stand out more. Should I try that? Actually, after staring at these coins for awhile, I'm at a point where I don't even know if I see an overdate anymore! Feel free to give opinions.
No? Junk then? I knew the first coin was pretty far off from the book, but the 2nd coin looked to me like there was a "1" directly in front of the "2". Are there other markers?
I believe that the 1942-D overdate will have the "2" in "1942" almost completely over the "1". Also, you can check the reverse mintmark. I believe that the "D" mintmark is repunched on the genuine 1942-D over 1941. Before you call these coins junk, please consult with others here at CT because I am not an expert on Mercury dimes.
NP... I think I'm leaning more and more towards them being pretty blah overall. There are probably 8 - 10 which look to be in AU+ condition...maybe BU and a few rarer dates thrown in, but none worth $500 - $1500 like I was hoping for. I think I want to keep 2-3 coins out and then ask melt value for the rest. I'm just not interested in collecting $10 - $20 coins. I'll post them up on the Cointalk sale thread in a day or two.
The 1942/1 over date is perfectly clear on the Philadelphia issue, but the 1942/1 D is a little harder to see. The easiest way to tell if it is a 42/1 D is to look at the 4 at the base should be some clear doubling and the 2 should have a blob at the end point at the top of the 2. It looks like one of your photos shows this, but it is a little blurry to say with any certainty. The photo below is the Denver issue.
Very good information. Using your picture i can definately make out where there base of the 1 would be with the 2 over dated.
