Only as strong as my dump banks...

Looking for some insight as to how I should proceed with CRHing. I live in the midwest and the closest self service coin counter I have found is sixty miles away. So in order to make that trip worth while I would need to dump thousands at a time and with doing two to four boxes per week, I would need to make that trip a minimum of every other week.
Every other bank has the coin counters operated by tellers behind the counter and dumping anything over five hundred at a time is a huge PITA and tellers get sick of it in a hurry.
I feel completely handcuffed as I have the funds to do three to five times this volume with no chance of getting rid of it without dumping five hundred at four to five different banks every week. This feels like being at a free buffet with no public restroom. I've had great results so far pulling over a hundred dollars face in less than three months but maybe I have reached my limit.
Any thoughts or ideas would be great. Thanks

Send the coin out in Coin lock bags to be counted. Ties up your money but it helps not upset the tellers so much.

I have tried this with two dump banks but both said they had to run everything through the coin counter. I will see if I can find another dump bank that may offer this service.

Unfortunately not. Biggest banks around here are US Bank and Wells Fargo. Of course both of these have been pickup banks so I didn't want to dump on them.

I've said it before and I will say it again, reroll your coins and put them back in their boxes. Most everyone on here seems to be opposed to this but once you get into a rhythm it is not too bad at all. I can reroll an entire box within a relatively short amount of time. I will usually empty out 20 rolls at a time and then reroll them after I've gone through the coins. I count the coins by 3s and before you know it the coins are all rerolled again and ready to be put back into their boxes.

A lot of people complain that they take a loss on using the machines due to foreign coins or shortages but by rerolling you don't have to worry about this happening. Redeeming these boxes at banks is usually very quick and easy as about 2/3rds of the tellers don't even bother to count the rolls when you bring in the boxes. Most just spot check the first few layers of rolls and then put the box of coins under their drawer.

^ I second the above. I reroll each roll after looking through it. It's not bad at all because you don't have to count them. I can get through a box of nickels in < 1hour.

That's what I do with CWRs but I do count each individual CWR now to look for overages. Sometimes I find CWR rolls that are over 2-3 coins per roll. One time I bought some CWR quarter rolls and I had $3.50 extra after I counted the individual coins from them.

Thanks for the advice but it just won't work in my area. As I said, all banks around here have teller operated coin counters and EVERY coin turned in has to be counted in the coin counter. Just last Friday, I purchased a box two boxes of dimes, both brand new 2011's. I took them to another branch and guess what, they had to unroll and run everything through the coin counter. Believe me, rerolling would not be a problem for me if that system worked here.

Just to also be clear, I have five to six bank accounts at different banks so it's not like I am just trying one or two.

I'd never reroll... I can tear through a box of halves in about ten minutes... factor in another 10 minutes to dump it... that's 20 minutes. how long does it take you to reroll that many halves?

It's weird to say but it sounds like you need to find a bank without a coin counter. I'm not going to suggest rerolling and reboxing because I always see fellow CRHers complain about getting boxes that have already been searched through when they are expecting to get an unopened box from the coin supplier.

I'm not going to name names at this time but some here should consider taking more of a "quality over quantity" approach. The amount of coins that some search on this forum is utterly ridiculous in my opinion. Also, there is more to be found than just silver which I agree takes about 1 second to notice.

This is quite interesting to read because in my area it is the complete opposite. There is just one bank in the entire region that I am aware of that has a coin counter for customers to use. None have a teller operated coin counter, either.

Given your seemingly unique situation I would stick to bringing your coins to the tellers to run through and redeem your coins for you. If they get flustered that you bring in more than $500 worth of coins I would immediately set them in their place and remind them that they are the ones who will not allow you to bring in rolls of coins to be redeemed. Remember, they work for you! They won't like it for a while but they won't push you around anymore and they will do as you say and respect you. Nice guys finish last and sometimes you can't always be nice to banks and their employees.

That being said, not everyone has the same interests/goals in coins. What works for some doesn't work for others. Some are in it just for the Silver and to me there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I know for me getting started with coins I was only interested in Silver & Copper to start out. But I'm slowly evolving to doing collecting dates for folders, and probably will eventually get more into looking at grading/numismatics, errors as I go. So to me it's been a real gateway into the hobby of coin collecting in general.

Also I co-sign with NOS about sometimes you have to lay down the law if you will. They are there to serve you. If certain tellers are continuing to make it an issue I would ask to speak with their Supervisor and let him/her know what is going on.

Also you mentioned US Bank and WF being your pickup banks, but maybe you could turn them in to dump banks, and see if you can order from some of the other banks you've been dumping a insteadt? Just a thought, not sure if that is a potential avenue.

I rewrap and put a mark on the wrapper. That way, I know if I get the same one again (and some friendly local tellers will notice and not give it to me in the first place)
Most banks will trust the count on a customer wrapped roll.

Also note that you don't want anyone to stop ordering for you, and the best way to make sure that they do so is by being normal and polite. It's like the time when I went to a bank and behind me was a major box searcher, but the tellers gave me the Frankies that they were holding, not the usual searcher (who probably didn't even ask).

and hey, if any of you get stuck with an all 2011 box, (1c, 5c, or 10c) Please think of me ?? My first granddaughter was born in 2011 and I want to hoard back some new rolls for her to have some day, but I have looked high and low and never found any. I'll gladly pay face + shipping in a USPS flat rate box + some small token of my appreciation for the effort. A silver dime? or maybe some of my wonderful dates that I grow?? Save you having to do a dump of all new coin.
Would love 2 rolls each of 25c and $1 too but can't do whole boxes of those.

I'm going through my 1st box of halves and re-rolling as I go, using the same wrappers. If I ripped the rolls open, how do I dump them ?

Here is what I have learned so far and advice I would give to new coin roll hunters. These steps are in order of importance.

    1. Read through this forum thoroughly.
    2. Figure out your dump banks (where you will dispose of your unwanted coin) and the coin depositing requirements for those banks.
    3. Finally, order coin and enjoy.

Now for the advice. Do NOT ask questions that have already been answered on a weekly basis that makes it obvious that step #1 was skipped altogether. Here are a couple questions that you will come up with after a couple skunks.
    Q. What boxes have the best results?
    A. Everyone has different results. Luck of the draw and volume.
    Q. Are brinks, garda, or dunbar culling silver?
    A. If they are, they suck at it.
    Q. Do CWR or boxes produce better results?
    A. They both can produce. Experiment with both in your area and find out.

    Happy Hunting!

I've collected for about 35 years, haven't searched rolls since about 1980. I would only bother with halves. customer wrapped rolls are virtually non-existant, therefore I finally ordered a box, nothing through 15 rolls.

Well welcome back to the sport! I think I have done probably on average two boxes a week for the last three months and am closing in on $150.00 face in 40% halves and $10 face in 90% halves. It's out there, order from different banks that use different courier services and see who has the goods! Best of luck!
