I know I've been starting a few threads lately, but this one I found pretty interesting.

This is in response to what random people think of coin collecting. I was expecting everyone to have nuetral/negative things to say about it, but most do not. Furthermore I was surprised by the number of woman who said that it was interesting/or that they might collect. I read a few of the pages and a number of people make reference to collecting and enjoying it as a child.

I don't know. Seems like most people I know that don't collect think it's pretty stupid. Of course, these are the same people who run out and spend their spare money on cash pits like boats and wave runners and airplanes. Well, ok, I admit, I'd love to have a plane too and might get one, but I'd never waste a dime on a boat.

I love to bore my secretary by going on and on about die parings of large cents. At first, I even had her taking notes (I amuse me). She quickly got wise and nearly runs out of the room whenever I get going nowadays.

Its not just coins. The people that don't collect don't know what it means to enjoy a hobby. But thats not to say its bad because to me I don't see the point in spending that money on cigarettes and killing yourself with it.

I gave her a choice of a 1936 proof set or two grand cash for her Christmas bonus last year. She took the cash. If she would have listened a little bit to my tirades, she would have known what these coins were worth. You can't get any good help anymore.

I like how one of the replys in the link features the image of a 1804 silver dollar.

As a former boat owner I can attest that the 2 happiest days in a boat owner's life is the day he gets his boat and the day he sells it.

I do believe, however, that the second day is always the happier of the two.

I think to the common masses, collecting anything, not just coins, is lame in another's eyes. I collect coins (dork), I collect stamps (nerd), I collect baseball cards (immature), I collect ladies phone numbers (cheat), I collect dust (go take a shower). It's all negative...yeesh

Kind of refreshing to bring opinions like this to this board.

Always a danger, since we all like coins by definition here, to think the whole world thinks like us.

I love it on the PM section when someone busts out, "if only 1% of the world bought an ounce of x......". Most of the world does not WANT an ounce of X, would never consider buying it, and also have absolutely no interest in "dirty old coins". We are the oddballs here, and its good to get a reality check once in a while to remember that. :)

When I started actively collecting again in 2010 I was told by many family members and a few friends I was wasting my money. The only one who seemed excited about it was my grandfather. He pulled out his collection one day and we went through it for several hours. He got all his coins for face value back in the day from the bank. At least he had the foresight to keep some of those silver coins. However little by little over the last couple of years my father and brother have slowly come around to the idea. Now they check their change and call me whenever they think they've got something. Dad ended up buying the Star Spangled Banner proof coin and I THINK the gold version as well. Mom ended up giving me an 1876 Half Dollar that she had. But it's times like finding a proof coin in circulation at the gas station that the cashier's look at you like you're nuts. I can't wait until my daughter is a little bit older, hopefully I'll pass the coin bug onto her.
