So I have an HCGS graded 1996 SIlver Eagle that is graded as an MS70. From things i've read, they're not the most reputable (or even exists anymore I dont think) grader and even from my untrained noobie eyes, i dont think it would be graded a 70 by PCGS. Because of their reputation, should I leave it slabbed for protection, or take it out if I intend to sell it? Just curious about the communities opinion on HCGS. Thanks!

I agree with Rick, but what does HCGS Stand for?

    You'll probably be disappointed.

I think it was Hallmark Coin Grading Service. Their grading standards were terrible, you can almost deduct two or more points every time. You could keep it in the holder just to protect it, but nobody will ever give any credibility to the grade on it.

It's worthless, just mail it to me for disposal

I would say leave it as is. It makes no difference if its in a HCGS holder or raw.

I assume this was the third Hallmark service? Slab sealed with a gold label? If it was the second Hallmark service those were mostly accurately graded (Shells with clipped corners, later used by PCI) Can't be the first Hallmark service because they only did currency.

If it is the third service then yes it is just a raw coin.

A slab collector may be interested in your coin.

By the way, is the coin gold-plated or is your white balance off?

Since it's a silver eagle, and that basement grader isn't around anymore, I think it's safe to say you have a 1 ounce bullion coin worth melt.

All the HCGS in that type of slab I see look terrible. The Morgan Dollars they grade are notoriously bad, all harshly cleaned coins. I'd say it's worth a fair premium only to a slab collector but that's it. If you think you've got a decent untampered coin I'd do a crossover to a more respected third-party grader.

I would sell it as is but tell folks that you don't feel the grade is correct.
The current holder is keeping the coin safe. Better than nothing.
