Learn by reading, looking and examining coins in hand and ask questions of other collectors and you should be okay. Ebay has a few checks in place so if you ever find yourself with a coin that is questionable, you'll be covered.

This is just a sign of the times. If there was no demand for counterfeit coins, there wouldn't be a market for them. Greedy sellers keep the counterfeiters pumping these out.... (Unless Detecto and the other X-Men wipe them all out.:D)

Good recommendations. Also, remember Mike you are already in the fire. I haven't seen nearly as many fake 79cc morgans over the years than I have fake 14d's. Sticking with your "comfort zone" may not be as comforting as you think.

Education is the real path to success in this hobby. Education and a healthy skepticism. :)

Meh, the used books are starting around $25, so not terrible. No reason to buy new if the used are in good condition and don't have missing papers, it's not the condition really as long as the information is still there I say. ;)

I thought they had raised, or were raising the max final value fee to $200 - maybe soon.

With the Chinese constantly improving their counterfeits, unless you have an older counterfeit, aren't the books a bit obsolete by the time they're printed?

Both are gone. Apparently removed by the seller - "item no longer available".

Never concentrate on how to spot a fake. That is always a failure move.

Learn how to spot authentic pieces. Really study your coins, learn all you can about them, so that any little slip up on the counterfeiters part you will spot.

I have never liked to learn how to spot a fake, since by the time someone teaches you about it the counterfeiters have learned it too and will not make the same mistake the second time.

Yep... the seller ended the auction because "the item is no longer available". You can still click the link "see original listing".

I think pride is clouding the real life judgements. We can't simply send out an armada of people to a country just to rid of counterfeiters. Even if you have been burned in the past. I think there's more pressing items on the agenda for the nation than fake morgans. As collectors, we provide our own level of protection, and that's using each other here on the forums to educate and awareness. That is the overall best way to combat the counterfeiting.

Um....I am going to have to disagree with you on this.

We have been at "war" with Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, and other countries over the past 10 years.

Besides what happened at 9/11, there really has not been any major terrorist events by those opposing countries.

But the plan that I would have would not involve any loss of life.

I said remove all people from counterfeiting operations, I did not say "forcibly" remove, or kill.

Once all those people are removed, tear down/blow up/ etc the buildings. In the sense of using minor explosives to level the buildings, not by dropping a Nuclear Bomb on it.

You can think I'm nuts...all you want, but in 10 years time when the coin market gets ruined by the Chinese, you will probably be thinking this is a good idea.

Seriously Detecto, do you really believe the Chinese would let us send in troops and blow stuff up in their country? Seriously?

I am a war vet. Its awfully easy to talk tough as a kid. I would love to have you have to see firsthand the brutalities of war and then see how important Chinese fake coins is versus that.

Promoting military action to help a stupid hobby is silly. China is not Iraq, they have missiles that can kill you in your sleep TONIGHT. It might be fun talking tough, but its not so danged fun when you have to worry about if your city will be nuked while you sleep.

How old are you Detecto? 19,20? You could have joined the military 3 years ago... So why not man-up and put your money where your mouth is. I find it funny that you are willing to risk peoples lives for YOUR HOBBY... as long as you can stay safe in your house, roll searching... Your an idiot and a coward...

Oh and detecto, can you tell me exactly where 5 counterfeiting factories are located???
I am guessing not. It is not illegal for the Chinese to counterfeit US coins, and it is more of a Prohibition setting. People make fakes in their basement just like Americans made whiskey in their bathrooms.
If you want to "Blow Up" the counterfeiting industries, you will at least kill quite a few citizens.

And Chris, very well spoken. I know a bit about what you are saying and it is not fun at all. Though I haven't experienced it firsthand, I have heard war vets talk of the traumas of war.

One more thing... FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, STOP CALLING THEM "ARMY MEN"... They are soldiers, sailors, marines or airmen... "Army men" are what 8 year olds play with...

on second thought... that might explain why YOU call them that..

It's a a lot more than a "basement operation". These pictures speak for themselves.

Detecto... these pictures have been around for years, we've all seen them. It's a perfectly legimate operation, located in China, discussed many times here (in depth), in other forums and just about every numismatic publication. I repeat... it's a perfectly LEGAL operation. Let it be, and educate yourself.

You really have no idea do you?

So ask yourself, before 9/11, how many terrorist attacks were there and how spread out were they? Are you not counting the daily terrorist attacks in other countries or just those carried out on U.S. soil? There's still terrorism and it's never going to go away completely. The war on terrorism is like the war on drugs, we'll keep on fighting and they'll keep on terrorizing. Stop one, another one will pop up.

So, you're argument is weak. Come up with a better one in justifying starting a war to end counterfeit coins made in China.

Since when is counterfeiting coins "legitimate"? Notice none of the coins have copy stamps?
