Just picked up my second ever box of pennies and my first ever box of dimes today. Pennies are all brand new 2011. The dimes are brand new 2012. I'm new at CRH and don't really know if it's worth opening these rolls up to look for blatant errors or what. Are there any know significant errors like doubled dies, etc, that you guys know of yet on these recent years? Should I just keep a few rolls with good-looking enders and send the rest back or what? What would you do? Thanks for all the help.
If you don't mind waiting for a return on your investment, you could sell them on eBay. I wouldn't keep a whole box though. I'd keep a few and open the rest looking for errors and varieties. You already have them so you may as well open them. Are they P or D. If P, I would love to have some, as it takes some time for them to get down to Oklahoma and by the time they get here, they are usually worn.
Sorry, to answer your question, I remember reading about some doubled die obverse 2011 cents. It probably won't be blatant though.
When I get a box of completely new dimes I just bring it to another bank and exchange it - I especially like doing this at banks that won't sell me rolls because they don't have enough on hand. Those banks usually have hand wrapped rolls and are THRILLED to get some nice and clean machine wrapped rolls in exchange.
Yes, take them back to some bank or run them through a coin counting machine and get yourself some news boxes ASAP. I get Strings & Son rolls here and they have the holes in top of the boxes to verify the roll count. My tellers let me check the boxes before purchasing to make sure I'm not buying solid 2011/2012 boxes. Try and burn through them quick and get yourself some nice dirty coins so you'll have a chance for silver! HOTN
I really hate new rolls. I'd definitely just dump them, although if it was me I'd probably keep one or two rolls of the shiny new coins and maybe one or two more to trade with someone for the mintmark I don't have
My first granddaughter was born in 2011 and I have looked high and low for some NEW 2011 rolls at a reasonable price. I'll offer face + shipping + a pound of these beautiful organic dates that I grow or some other small incentive to make it worth your while for the whole box!
some collectors might be interested in the new date stuff (the 2012s) Like me. P or D? I'd be interested in D (I'll get P in my area in time) machine wrapped rolls generally have the end coins somewhat visible. so at least check those.
