What the? Out snipped at 0.5 seconds.

    Since we're discussing eBay and not Heritage or Teletrade, Cringley is not correct as all of the auctions I've seen on eBay, do not end when any bidder drops out and clearly have a count down the last 60 minutes of the auction.

    Yea i get what you're saying. Me and cringley were referring to HA i think. TT does not have live auctions, that i know of. Cringley, or atleast Myself were not reffering to ebay.

    That is true but ebay still runs by the same rules as a mail bid auction, not a live auction. But it IS still a true auction.

    Yeah, so ? There are also lots of B&M dealers that don't use ebay, but do have their own web sites. But that doesn't have anything to do with what we are discussing either.

    Yes, that is one of the reasons that you can save money by not buying on ebay. But it is not the only reason.

    Another reason, and the most common one in my opinion, is that many people on ebay simply over-pay for coins because they do not know the market well enough. Do you dispute that this happens quite often ? Yes or no ?

    Yet another reason is that they get caught up in bidding wars on ebay. Do you dispute that this happens quite often ? Yes or no ?

    Yet another reason are these sniping programs, all of us have seen auctions end much higher than they should have in the last couple of seconds because of the sniping programs. Do you dispute that this happens quite often ? Yes or no ?

    There is no absolute Paul, and I never claimed there was. My claim is quite simple and it is this. More often than not, you can buy a coin from a dealer for less money than you will pay for it on ebay. And it doesn't matter why that claim is valid Paul, it only matters that it is.

    No, the real fun is getting the coin you want at the price you want or were willing to spend. There's no real fun in egotistical bidding wars because when you don't get what you want, you come here to start threads to moan and complain about getting sniped or outbid in the last few seconds of an auction. ;)

    Okay you're comparing an auction listing from Heritage, with two eBay listing that are not auctions, but a BIN with a set price for the same grade.

    What probably happened was his maximum bid was higher than yours, so he was given the preference at your high bid with the snipe. If you had put say $1000 maximum bid on items you want that are expected to sell for $100 or so, you are likely to win every time.

    Sure it has risk, but not as much as you would expect, you are only going to outbid the highest buyer by the minimum increase. So you end up paying the auction market value of the item. Kinda insures you get what you want.

    The only loss you might have is if someone really wants the item and they greatly over bid it's value. Then you gotta contact them and make them a deal and take a smaller loss.

    I believe I have missed out on a good number of bids by someone doing what I just described ? I think there are a few coin dealers doing it, hoping the items go for under FMV to resell them in their stores.

    I don't need to provide a guarantee, I am not the one who made a ridiculous claim, you are!

    If there are dealers who have internet stores but no E-Bay stores, post some links so we can compare their prices. What are you afraid of?

    No I don't dispute this, but people who don't know the market overpay in general, they don't all buy their coins from E-Bay.

    NO I don't dispute this, bidding wars happen. Now go on E-Bay and figure out what percentage of coin listings are BIN compared to auction listings (without reserves).

    YES I do dispute this, sniping programs eliminate the bidding wars. Everyone enters their max bid, they are executed and if someone had a max bid higher, you lose. You don't get the opportunity to change your mind and go bid again.

    Your claim is ridiculous and you have not provided any evidence whatsoever that you can obtain almost every coin cheaper from a dealer than on E-Bay.

    Tell ya what Paul, you go pick 10 completed auctions from ebay, just ordinary coins, stuff that people buy all the time - and post the 10 links here.

    edit - by the way, you have agreed that there are at least 3 different situations where my claim would be true. So I don't see how you claim it is ridiculous.

    The burden of proof is on you, not me. You made the claim, now back it up! What happened to a link to a dealer website that I asked for?

    So asking yes or no questions that are irrelevant is your proof. Nice try!
