This one is ex. Ken Bressett. I was interested in this coin without the provenance. Probably ended up paying more than I should have because of that. Germany. Bavaria, Louis IV. 1317-1374. AR Pfennig Composition: Silver Diameter: 15mm Weight: 1.37 g Dortmund. Berghaus 22. Toned, weak in part. Good VF. From the Ken Bressett Collection.
A random selection. Henry VIII posthumous issue 4oz silver groat struck at Durham House. ex Parsons, Ryan and Blakey collections. 1787 trial pattern sixpence by J or F Eginton for Samuel Garbett, struck in white metal. ex James Watt and Bole collections Archbishop Eanbald II copper styca. ex Lockett Double reverse pattern halfpenny (P1023). ex Rogers, Norweb and Selig collections An original proof striking in silver of a 1799 Fullarton halfpenny token on a thin flan by John Milton. ex Cockayne and Deane collections
I don't have any medieval hammered coins yet.I've always been interested in the history and empires, goal for 2023.
I don't like to be morbid or wish John any ill, but I suspect it might involve an unfortunate demise under the blades of a lawnmower.
Unfortunately I can't find the "E" on the 1644 half crown you mentioned. The "ox" below the date stands for Oxford I presume?
Patrick Deane, the dealer who sold the first portion of his token collection at Baldwin's last October. That Bedale halfpenny wasn't in the catalogue as far as I could see, so was it one that he had sold previously off a list?
The E is seen as the first letter of EXVRGAT and in DISSIPENTVR to the right of 1644 OX. The same E punch was used on the D23 obverse in REX by the tip of the sword. OX stands for Oxford.
A few more patterns An 1887 Weyl milled edge pattern halfpenny struck in tin. ex Murdoch, Roberts and Nicholson collections Freeman 706A 1859 pattern decimal halfpenny struck in aluminium bronze. ex-Peck collection An undated farthing size copper uniface with a Victoria bust punch engraved by 'C'. This piece is quite interesting, because although the identity of 'C' is uncertain, it's appearance in a 1993 Glendining sale together with a large number of Weyl patterns allowed the coins to be identified as being from the Murdoch and Roberts collection as the contents were identical to several lots in Murdoch (1904) and included this enigmatic piece. This coin is also ex Colin Cooke who purchased it at the 1993 sale. Weight 4.26g. 1806 silver proof halfpenny type KH43, struck from currency dies. Peck lists 3 examples, the BM, Blackburn Museum and his own, now in Birmingham Museum. Whether this is the only available example is uncertain, but I don't know of any. ex-Selig An early Soho 1788 Droz pattern halfpenny DH4 P945 struck in copper with a lettered edge (RENDER etc). ex Brigg, Deane and Rogers. P991, 1790 restrike bronzed copper halfpenny, ex Boulton family collection
Well not exactly a famous collection but I could use some help in this attribution. My Julius Caesar bronze Aes is ex-NFA {Numismatic Fine Arts}. Recently I found the tag, lot# 1085, but unfortunately it's undated. They're not in business any more so I can't just call them up or Google. I believe the auction was around 1990 ? as I recall being in Houston at the time & bidding on it. If someone could find the exact sale# that would be very helpful. Thanks.
I can't help because my US catalogues are a bit thin on the ground having only a few hundred in total from all houses. Have you tried Bryce Brown in Avon CT? He might have one in stock.
