OK so I've wanted one for a really really long time. I have the ability to purchase for the same price a 1910 NGC MS62 (mintage of 482,000 - 22nd lowest of the 52 minted coins) or a 1914S NGS MS63 (mintage of 1.4 million...still a decent date, but less rare at 33rd lowest of 52). They are obviously very close (62 vs 63). The 1914s definately has a bit better luster but both are beautiful. Would you get the lower mintage 62 or the higher mintage 63?
These are seller's pics and theyre not that good. They're pretty much identical...with the 14-S having a bit better luster. The point is lower mintage lower grade vs higher mintage higher grade.
Yeah...the pics for the 1910 might just be kinda worse but the more I look the more I like the 1914s.
I would ask are you a set collector or just buying for type. The 14 is obviously a better coin, I like the luster a lot. If you are collecting a set is the main reason I would buy the 10 since it many be harder to find one later. Just for clarity I violated this rule myself, buying some C and D minted gold in vf just for fun due to their scarcity. Just because I give advice doesn't mean I always follow it. Its a hobby man, listen to other people's advice, feel free to ignore it, and buy what gives you better "warm and fuzzy" feeling deep down. Good luck choosing!
It sounds like this is your first St. Gaudens so i would go with the nicest example. Based on the photos, I would choose the 14-S. Good luck.
Tell ya what Petro, if I were you I'd wait and keep looking. There are nicer examples out there and lots of them - and for the same money. And if you spent $100 more you could move up to a 64 in either.
Yes, for now I am just buying one. My criteria was I wanted a nice somewhat better-date example around 63 at a decent price...I can get either of these for $1750 which I think is more than fair. I'm definately leaning towards the 1914S at this point, but maybe I will sleep on it another day and think about the advice GDJMSP offered.. Thanks to all for their input!
Patience is a very good thing when it comes to buying coins. And trust me Petro, that money is NOT going to burn a hole in your pocket
Patience is the gateway to perspicacity. Uncirculated double eagles are easy to come by, so you would be better served by waiting and perhaps, as Doug suggested, spend a bit more for a MS64 example. But to answer your question - if I was to pick betwixt the two coins you mentioned, I'd take the 10.
