I'm not really into Barbers, so my experience with them is very limited. Any one care to give me their opinion of grade and/or value on this one?
I'd say between good and very good. Perhaps G6 is what I'd grade it as, but definitely not over VG8 though, it's only got one visible letter in Liberty and the motto on the back is almost gone as well.
You do realize the silver alone is worth about $11 currently right now, right? I'd actually be willing to pay about $15 or so range for this coin. I mean it's low grade but doesn't appear to have any problems so it's still desirable in my opinion.
Whoops! My bad; I thought the coin he was showing was a Barber Dime; not half. Dunno how I completely missed the reverse. I take back my comment; it's definitely worth at least $15, maybe up to a little past $20.
Id like to ask a question as this has been on my mind for a while. Just because silver melt is 11 dollars on this coin have any of you tried to get it to sell at that price anywhere but ebay. Pawn shops here where i live pay 5 dollars max. So if you cant sell it local for melt why is the price you keep saying 11 dollars.
Maybe because most do not go to your local pawnshop? Just a thought. There are plenty of avenues to sell such a coin other than Ebay... private buyers, coin shops/shows, collectors. Anyone who feels they need to sell this coin at $5 to a pawnbroker is delusional.
Dealers (Pawn Shops are considered Dealers too) usually pay between 40%-80% of the actual value. You do realize they have to make money as well. They can't be buying stuff for say, $11 and then turn around and sell it for $11. If they did that, they wouldn't be in business.
That pawn broker probably goes to a reputable coin dealer down the street at the end of every day, with all of the precious metals he's purchased, and instantly doubles his money.
It's got a rim ding at 7 o'clock on the obverse. I'm afraid that will hurt the value. I'd say G details, net grade AG due to the rim
I think my local B&M would pay between $8 and $9 for this coin. But I'll tell you what... I love Barber halves in this condition. A dealer at the local coin show had a bunch of these similar to the OP's, all common dates, for $14 each. I bought a dozen, and got a slight discount.
I saw that rim ding too but wasn't sure if it is grading factor when it comes down to coins at this end of the spectrum. On the reverse, it looks like there is a smaller one at 1:30 -2 o'clock as well.
I've got this one with a fairly nice rim ding that graded PCGS VG-8. This actually has a few rim dings. One most prominent is near 3 o' clock on the reverse.
