I've been working alot on trying to get good coin photos this evening. These are about the best I got. Raw 1885-O Morgan. What are your opinions?
IMO it is a great Strike, but a MS62, maybe a 63 if the scratches aren't so vissible in the hand. Its a nice strike.
Thats the tricky part about this coin. It looks like a solid 63 in hand to me. My pics seem to over do the contact marks. But I'm not exactly sure about Liberty's neck... I just looked at it under 10x magnification. There are several contact marks in that area. But I'm afraid there may also be a scrath amongst them, that is bad enough to possibly be considered damage
I was thinking about saying Genuine just because of all the scratches. But if it's not, it'll be at least 61.
Need to get Doug to weigh in on this. I can't tell from the photo if that is damage, but I'm thinking towards that conclusion. Its a solid 62 otherwise, IMO.
62-63. That scratch is gnarly, hope it's not as bad in hand. That is a heck of a strike for an '85 New Orleans tho!
If it wasn't for that mark on the neck it would be about MS62. That scratch really affects the grade.
I'm tellin' you guys, my heart just sank. Morgans are an area where I think I grade well. And as I read this thread, I thought that the "62" grades were reasonable from the photos. But I believed it was a 63, because most of the bag marks don't look nearly that bad in person. But I hadn't realized that there was indeed an actual scratch on the neck. After reading mrbrklyn's comment about possible damage, I examined it further. And sure enough, it IS a scratch I hadn't noticed before. This coin has damage for sure, in the form of that scratch on the neck, which is why my heart sank Oh well, you live and you learn.
Yes it is a heck of a strike. Just check out this link http://www.cointalk.com/t56838/ The 85-O is listed in the intermediate strike.
I don't know. Historically I've purchased a few Peace Dollars like that, especially from Stacks. Darn if I know what the market would bare.
Grade My Morgan Looks like a 62 to a 63, it is hard to determine what happened to the lower neck. It depends on what the graders had for lunch and how much coffee they had, and the mood they are in. That usually determines what grade they assign.http://www.cointalk.org/images/smilies/smile.gif
