I'm new to the forum. I'd like to know how many Hobo Nickel collectors visit the forum? Are there any modern hobo nickel carvers on the site?
Hobo Nickel Photo I'm a Hobo Nickel carver, I sign my Hobo Nickels "SG" on the Buffalo.I've been carving for 3 years.Any feedback on the nickel photo that I posted, it is a recent carving.Sorry for not posting any information sooner, I'm new to the site.
these are the 3 that i have. all by the same artist. got them on ebay a few years back for a steal. .
Haha thx, its the first (and so far only) hobo nickle ive made. All i had to make it was a knife and a file
I've always wondered what kind of tools were used to create these. My guess is some sort of scribing tools and a variety of punches. I am way too impatient for that, but some of these guys really do beautiful work. Especially on such a small canvas.
Well one of the main things needed is a special vice clamp that holds the coin steady. Then they use tiny etching tools and picks. if you check youtube you can see some of the pros doing it.
Hi Hobo,Thanks for responding to my thread. You have some great Hobo Nickels there! I especially like the 1935 with the great detail on the ear and the ribbon on the hat, very professionally done! Nice clean sharp details. It must have a very high value. The top pictured 1936 also is very nicely done. The bottom pictured 1936 looks like an original carved Hobo???
Hi Urbanchemist, A nice collection of nickels! The artist looks like Foster??? Great profile changes on the 1936 Buffalo Nickel and on the 1939 Jefferson Nickel. I especially like the Indian Chief on the 1944 Jefferson! It is very detailed and difficult to carve that high quality.
Hi BillZach, I've seen your hobo nickels on Ebay in the past. You are a very talented carver! Thanks for your input.
I do like Hobo nickels! Here one that sold for 13k:devil: http://www.coinworld.com/articles/hobo-nickel-brings-13-750/
