We've had something of a Central American theme here on the World Coin board lately, so here's another often-overlooked country. British Honduras, which became Belize sometime in the 1970s. What I like about these coins is they have an old-fashioned look and very low mintages. Here are three 1 cent coins. 1924: mintage 50,000 1966: mintage 100,000 1996: mintage unknown.
Here is a 1911 5 cents: mintage 10,000. 1919 5 cents: mintage 20,000. 1974 1 cent silver proof: mintage 35,000
Finally, 1911 50 cents: mintage 12,000 1976 50 cents: mintage 312,000 2003 1 dollar: mintage unknown.
There's one seller on eBay who must have found a hoard of them or something because he will list like 30 of them at a time and then always has more the next week. I just looked and he has some more auctions ending in the next few days. That's where I got the older ones. I like the idea of owning a coin that only 10,000 were produced.
I think I know the seller you're talking about. I just won a 1897 50 Cent British Honduras piece from him. It's old and rare: 20,000 mintage. I won it for $21.55 in VG/G condition.
I know that seller as well. He/she always has a hoard of the same country or region for sale for each auction period.
