Do any of you rat-hole these? The collection I just inherited, my father had the '64's and post '64's separated, but he rat-holed the post coins. Is there a reason to hang on to these, or should I get face value for them to by other coins? thank you.
The 1964 are 90% silver, and the 1965-1970 are 40% silver. I would spend the rest unless they were prisitine. Welcome to the forum! jim
Post 64 Kennedy's are worth more than face value...they still have a good amount of silver throughout the rest of the 1960's....
1964 kennedys are 90% silver 1965-1970 are 40% silver. 1971 and up will not have silver unless they have an "S" mintmark.
I have a set of P's and D's to present because I'm a collector. I have quite a few 64s put away to buy bread with if/when our currency collapses. The 70-S was only included in mint sets and will run you about $20 to get one. That's really the highest one of the set. I paid up to 10-20x face to get some MS ones from the 80s. But that's for roll fresh ones. The later dates from about 2001 on have not been made for circulation. They're mainly only put out as a token gesture for collectors. They produce right around 1.7 million Ps and 1.7 million Ds every year. A very low number compared to all other coins being minted but they are all meant for collectors and almost all will be saved. As the years go by they seem to for slight premiums over what you can buy them for as they come out. I don't think there will be a shortage of them unless 2 million people decide they want to put together full Kennedy half sets. Probably less since some people buy bags and rolls of them to hoard. They are nicer, lower mintage coins to buy. They look great and it's neat to think that if 1.8 million people in the world each wanted one, there wouldn't be enough to go around. I might go buy my 2012s right now.
