I have had a potential winner, I am awaiting a reply regarding their age. I will post the answer and a little history of the coin as soon as I hear from them.
I'm not sure that is necessary, all coin collectors are widely known to be a very trustworthy bunch. I just didn't see an indication of age, their word would be enough. BTW, a second correct answer has been given.
Congratulations to Numis-addict for being the first with the correct answer. The 1964-D Peace Dollar. The 64 Peace dollar was produced in the millions, but never released to the public. It is rumored that these dollars were produced and melted, but many believe that as many as 2500 coins survive. It would be, at this point, illegal to own one because it would be considered stolen property of the mint and would be subject to confiscation similar to the 1933 double eagle. I eagerly await the day that the government "finds" these dollars and has another GSA sale. I may have a long wait ahead of me. Thank you all for participating, I will do another one soon.:smile
Thank you for the contest. And as for the GSA sale, you may be waiting till the grave. If it does happen, then it could be extremely expensive, especially if the assumed 2500 are all that exist. A guy can dream though
I think the denver mint only produced about 300,000 before they melted them down. I could be wrong. Ruben
It should be mentioned that cpm9ball, mrbrklyn and joedas also correctly answered. Joedas is only 17 so I thought a second place prize was in order. The Peace Dollar collection was the first series that I completed, nearly twenty five years ago now, so it hold a special place in my collection. The price of the 1964 would be immaterial to me and I would have to have one. I am not a rich guy by any means, but I would find a way to have one. All I would have to do is beat all of those ebay flippers to the punch.
I'm not sure that anyone knows the mintage figures conclusively. Perhaps that is the reason for much of its mystique. Whatever the number, the story of 1964 dollar to me is one of the greatest in numismatics.
That is correct, but has already been answered. Sorry guys this contest is over, but I will have another soon.
