do you think this was appropriate?

PErsonally I think certain thefts being punished by death would not be so bad. I can think of certain thefts where it was literally the worst possible thing a human could do.

Now would a $2 coin be one of those punishable by death instances? Lol no. Tbh the thought is just silly and could/should have been handled with way more tact. Seeing as how the accused was 16 and the item in question was a whooping $2 item the man could have taken it upon himself to steer a young person from wrong (if he did infact do it). If I was the store owner, I would like to think i would take the opportunity to steer a young blood on the good path, then once I realized just how wrong I was, apologize profusely then give the boy some freebees to show how sorry I was.

Fair enough, I suppose we disagree.

However, I would like you to answer my question -- how would you have handled the situation? How would a casino?

To put it a bit more directly, I don't see how you could avoid confronting the alleged thief and locking the door before so doing seems completely reasonable. Now they might have been a bit nicer, and they might have been a bit more timely, but I'm not sure that I would have acted that much differently.

    Help me out here.....Mike

p.s. Paul, Ruben, and Mike all in a thread -- did we timewarp to 2008? :)

Really, theft above rape or murder? I find that hard to believe where a theft is the worst possible thing a human could do in almost any circumstance. Theft usually implies one loses a material possession, which to me, is just a possession that can in most cases be replaced or life is not necessary for such possession.

So what did you steal? Jk.. Lol i bet you took that 2.00 coin.. Lust like a bad episode of cops.. You probable did not put it in your pocket.. Lol its probably hiding somewhere else..

I kid.. Some people just take life to serious.. I am sure he has been ripped off in the past and he should know by now how to react. By locking the door he is just asking for trouble.. If it were me i would have definatley called the authorities.. If he has camera footage of you "stealing" i am sure there is footage of him locking the door with you inside. I think you need to go public with this and not allow him to try to intimidate people by taking things into his own hands. I am sure you would put a damper on some of his business if you went public.

Well i just took the time to write a example of how thievery can not only ruin lives but also take many innocent ones as well as scar the livings forever. However after writing it I realized it was far too dark to be forum appropriate so i just copy pasted it in a notepad file, thinking such things arn't meant for the coin forum.

But there are many many ways thievery can be tragic.

    I *love* this thread

First of all, my kudos to OldSilver. He did everything right, in the store, after the sale and in his post. This is a kid (sorry, kid LOL) who is 16, literate, able to express himself clearly in verbal and written communication and most importantly, has solid critical thinking skills.

Don't worry about the paragraph police, you'll have plenty of practice through the rest of high school and into college. Your grammar, syntax and spelling are all high-functioning, MUCH better than the majority of your peers.

I also read the replies and updates with great interest. The outpouring of support speaks really well for this community, there were a plenitude of opinions expressed, some of which were wildly divergent from others, but the conversation stayed civil. I just really liked reading a thread that clearly expressed the best of all of us.

haha thank you! i dont even pay attention to the members that focus more on language arts than coin issues. im in advanced placement 11th grade english, i do not need any assistance from this forum when it comes to writing. a well written essay for my class takes me atleast an hour to write to make sure everything is perfect, this post i typed in 35 seconds so i could care less about proper transitioning as long as my point gets across. but you know, if being rude and sarcastic because i didnt write a proper 5 point essay makes you happy, more power to ya'

well, with that attitude maybe i can start to see things from the dealer's point of view a LITTLE bit, but not much.....at 16 bro you know very little, despite what you may tell yourself......you don't need to get all upset just because someone said that they don't see the point of your post......and while i think it is ridiculous if the events were exactly as you specified but i would be willing to bet if the dealer was on here he may have a few other details to throw in.....there also may have been mitigating circumstances that while they were not your fault, may have influenced the situation....a dealer who has been the nice guy and assumed the best of people and been burned time after time may have been prejudiced against you because you are young....and when he originally accused you of stealing something i can easily see you getting all high and mighty just as you did when someone criticized your post....all in all in is a sad situation but not a very big deal......the fact that he apologized and the fact that you have responded maturely to the situation at least seems to give the story a happy enough ending in my opinion.

I keep going back and forth with this. I can see the dealer being upset.. Putting something in your pocket at a B and M or a coin show is not a good idea. On the other hand.. If I were in your shoes and a dealer locked the door and approached me in such a manner.. Things would get real ugly real fast! REAL UGLY... Can guarantee that a LEO would be coming.

oh my goodness! can we please move past this post because clearly i cannot win. when i responded to the person who said he doesnt see the point in my post i said multiple times that im not trying to be rude and im not trying to offend. and when my father called the shop owner, my father told the owner exactly what i had relayed to him which is EXACTLY what i said in the original post. if you dont believe it thats fine but you dont need to make me look like a liar in front of the entire forum. i dont know what you can possibly base your opinion that im leaving details out, but i did not get "high and mighty" with the dealer. i simply emptied my pockets said multiple times that i didnt take anything (in a scared tone not like a smartass) and i stated my level of english class in a sense of accomplishment becuse i worked hard to get their. the one downside of typing is that tone can not be expressed or percieved flawlessly. i ensure you that the way it sounded in my head was not in an attempt to reguard myself as a master wordsmith. and again with the age thing.....i have said probably 4 times in this post that I UNDERSTAND THAT I HAVE AN IMMENSE AMOUNT OF KNOWLEDGE TO ATTAIN AND THAT I AM ONLY 16. THAT BEING SAID, IM NOT 6, I HAVE THE ABILITY TO ASSESS AND HANDLE SITUATIONS IF AND WHEN THEY ARISE. I MAY ONLY BE 16 BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN MY PRIOR EXPERIENCE BOTH IN THE COLLECTING WORLD, AND BUSINESS WORLD IS MEANINGLESS AND USELESS. im sure i will recieve backlash for this reply but i just dont understand what i have to do for readers of this post to understand that while i am humble and know that i will remain a student of the world forever, i still have enough experience and knowledge to feel that i can be treated like an adult on this forum instead of some little kid who needs to be spoonfed information. again, this is not meant as a personal attack towards you, you just happened to be the poster that made me feel the need to vent a little.

You probably should have called the police if he wasn't allowing you to exit the store. As others have said, it falls under the terms of false imprisonment. You actually haven't committed a crime (Shoplifting) until you leave the premises without paying for the merchandise.

As someone who used to work in retail management, catching shoplifters is super-precarious.. you need absolute proof to absolve yourself of any and all liability... or they can nail you to the wall and clean you out for slander. I had to take 10 hours of training per quarter on the proper way to handle situations like that.

The more you post, the more I'm beginning to see things from the dealer's POV.
You're 16 years old kid. I have shoes that are older than that.
I know you feel you're all grown up but, trust me, you're not.
Enjoy being young, you've got plenty of time to become an old geezer like me! :D
