What is accented hair? Can someone give me a link or pictures of the difference? I run across 1964 Kennedy Halves all the time at the pawnshop and never check for accented hair.

It's a proof only variety, so I wouldn't expect you to run across them too often except as parts of sets.

It was the first obverse die used for proofs.

The name comes from some stronger (some say additional, others say just deeper strikes) hairlines just above JFK's ear. Reportedly (though unverified) the widow of the late President did not like the look, and the die was changed.

The most notable diagnostic isn't the hair at all, but rather the letter I in LIBERTY. The accented hair variety is "missing" the serif on the bottom left of the I. it's easy to spot, even with the naked eye.

http://www.ipotad.com/pages/ah2.html has more detailed info, some other diagnostics, and some excellent photographs.

    Hope that helps. :)

Here is something I made today in PSE; maybe it will help the next time people need to authenticate an accent hair variety.
