First one is a 1954-S Jefferson nickel. Got it in a mixed lot from a bid board and no that's not toning that's what I thought at first. I had to ask the dealer what was up with the nickel and apparently it's improper metal mix on the sheet they punch the planchets from. It's the copper bleeding through either it wasn't mixed properly or there was too much copper to nickel in the sheet back in the 50's. Still not sure if they just didn't care back then or if the coins struck on this sheet should have been pulled by quality control. Second coin I thought was neat. It's a dealer box find the ash colored crecent from liberty to trust that runs through lincolns hair and forehead and another bit on his bust under the date is very light florescent green toning. I didn't know copper could go florescent green; I've seen silver dollars do it.
I hope you do have a type 1&2 but I hope you are remembering that it's only the 1979's that are filled and open. The 1981 mint mark difference is in the shape and roundness of the serifs (the start and tail of the S) and how the type 2 looks "flat" compared to the type 1 see the link below bakers coins has a type 2 that is almost completely filled and one that is "clear". Take a look at the pics and then decide or take them to a dealer. http://www.bakercoins.net/learn/articles/sba/sba.html
BIN on eBay for $14 and free shipping. I couldn't go wrong. As for jello's comment, If this coin was graded now it would most likely have the cameo designation. But in the 1986-89 period when this coin was slabbed, PCGS did not attribute coins with cameo or deep cameo surface designations.
This came in today. NGC MS-66, 1949. I just love this design. My pics. Wish the slab didn't have a scratch on the obverse.
I don't have a pic, but my roommate just gave me an 1877 seated liberty dime And my wife came home with a 1947 S dime that I didn't have yet It's a good day.
Saw this one on eBay. Thought it was nice! A great representative for the grade! :thumb: Nice pick-up! -Brian
Beautiful piece, Green18 - thanks for showing it! As a frequent traveler to Maine, I admit I never looked up their Centennial Half... That's a miss on my part. -L
