I came across this coin a few years ago and thought it looked different. Only a portion of the date can be seen the rest is covered. On the back side there is a corresponding depression. Can anyone tell me if this coin is rare or can a date be obtained by other means. Thanks for any help.

Is the coin rare..no it's an SBA. What you have is definitely cool and that you dont see everyday.
On the obverse is a "cud' and a very nice one. On the reverse, I am not sure. I dont think it's PMD because there are no hammer marks or plier marks. I will let others chime in

Excellent find! I like it a lot. Great die break and corresponding weakness on reverse. I'm no expert, but you can't help that it hit the date to cause you not to know which year.

When a die breaks out a chunk like this did, the metal of the planchet flows into the pocket causing litlle to no impression on the opposite side of the coin. Too bad this didn't occur at the front of the date or elsewhere. Dating the coin will be next to, if not impossible to accomplish. Very nice example of a "cud"! Were it an S mint, you could have at least have been sure it was from one of the first three years of minting. Not being an expert on SBAs, I don't know if there are identifiers that are peculiar to a certain year such as shape/size of mint mark or something else.

It's a 1979. Listed in the CUD Book and yours is the first of a 3 part cud progression (see my attached examples). Date is known because at the time the cud was 1st discovered, only 1979 SBA's were being minted. The 1980's weren't out yet.

Wow they used that die until there was nothing left.
Very cool find that the OP has, and thanks for the pictures of the die state progression- Really interesting!
