Do any of you have any ways you get others interested and involved in coins? I do alot of trading and selling of Sports cards and I was thinking about adding a coin to every package I ship. This will at least get people thinking about coins. I have about 300 canadian pennies from the 1930's and about 300 nickle halves. Any thoughts on this or what do you do to get the hobby noticed
If its on eBay put it in the description that you sell coins (if you do). I always put an extra coin into ebay packages make me feel happier
Great, but don`t throw in anything too dear, I put in a coin worth $0.10 and they thank me for the "gift" in the feedback. On ebay between coin sellers there seems to always be a gift or something which is cool :smile
thanks for the info.. I will start poping in some nice Maple leaf pennies.. lol with them being discontinued soon people may appreciate them more. I can probably spare a few 1930 canada pennies
Well there are some coin collectors that trade coins on sports cards forums. You can always find out who also collect coins and include something in the trade. Otherwise I find some sports cards collectors have no interest in coins.
I like showing off old patterns to my friends and explaining how few were made and the purpose. It doesn't take long for them to start thinking of the historical people who may of handled the very coin that they are holding. I always include Mardi Gras doubloons in my ebay packages. Not sure how that helps getting people interested, but I always have a huge bag of them by the end of Mardi Gras and it's a great way to get rid of them.
it is nigh impossible to "get someone interested" in my experience the person has always had a latent interest in collecting, and they just need a gentle push to get them going. i have helped countless youngsters over the years to start their collections, but they have always been change searchers to start with.
Well when I go to my favorite coffee shop I drop a 50 cent piece in the tip jar. Actually now I just hand them out if I have any on me. They love it.
I think these are great things. I am going to be sure to do all I can do to peak others interest in this amazing hobby.
I don't promote coin collecting, I want less people to collect, so the demand drops and I reap the benefits by more coins at lower prices.
Only applies to collectors and not sellers though. I'm strictly a collector, nothing gets sold once it enters into my coin family.
For years and years I carried a 1 oz AGE in my pocket. I would take that coin out of my pocket at the least little excuse. And inevitably, somebody would ask - what's that ? I'd let them look at it, see that it was gold, feel the weight. Never once did that not generate interest. The majority of people never even knew such US coins existed so they would be amazed to see such a thing. Over the years the simple fact of me carrying that coin in my pocket created several hundred new coin collectors. It doesn't take much, just takes something to capture that initial spark of interest. From there on it's all downhill
Ive never really gotten anyone into coins. When I get a Kennedy, Buff, or a wheat in change I just look it over & if it isnt of any interest to me I throw it back in circulation. I do have my mom interested in ancients just a bit. First time I showed her one when I got into them 3 years ago she thought it was neat and when I have showed her others that have some animal on it or bird or even a empress she examines it like a pro, holding the edges and looking it over. Now whenever she gets the mail before me and there is a package for me, she wants to know what ancient I got to see. But there is some she doesnt care for. Its fun to have a parent interested but also not collect. Honestly shes never been a collector of any kind. Now my dad *hoarder*....
I've gotten a few of my friends' kids into coins. They were young enough to still have the wide-eyed excitement about them which has carried on now that they are older. A couple search rolls and two frequent the coin shops and coin shows. All it took was a couple of foreign coins and some pre-1900 coins to get them interested.
