Thanks guys, yeah it's the scanner. Actually used the one I have at work and it is notorious for not imaging correctly. I inspected that note up and down and there wasn't any fold line on there. I'll rescan it later at home and repost it here later. I did use a piece of black gator board on the back of the silver certificate, you can't see through it. I'll have to try that on the Hawaii too.

This may (or may not) end up being a note printed on security paper provided by the Gilbert Paper Company. Currently I'm investigating records dating back to the early 60's concerning an educational contract between the Gilbert Paper Company and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to locate a second supplier of security paper to print US currency. Crane and Company has supplied the security paper for almost 150 years. I received this note from one of the new owners of the Gilbert Paper Mill property located in Menasha, Wisconsin. It had been shut down for over 20 years, and after purchasing the property, the new owners came upon a large safe deep in the main administration building basement. They contracted a local locksmith to open the safe, and after gaining access to the safe, they found 1,100 new, consecutive, BEP banded one dollar bills. They are all series 1963A, Chicago District, one dollar bills. The official Gilbert notes are series 1963 Philadelphia District one dollar bills with a serial number range between C60800001A thru C61440000A (640,000 notes, 20,000 sheets). The Gilbert Paper Company supplied WAY MORE than this total. I have obtained copies of the original contract between the BEP and the Gilbert Paper Company from the BEP's Historical Resource Center through the Freedom of Information Act. The contract ran from July of 1964 through June of 1965. Some series 1963A one dollar bills were being printed as early as April 1965. I'm trying to get detailed records from the BEP through the National Archives in College Park Maryland. I'll let everyone know how this goes later this year.

    F-2101a-H Series 1928A $50 (Dark Green Seal) - FRN

PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent
    SN: H 00499120 A

The label's mention of Apparent in the grade is to the presence of glue on the note. It can primarily be seen (in hand) in the center vertical area of the face (left of portrait vignette) and again on the back of this note. In the scan you may be able to see some trace of this 'glue' showing on the back side, just to the right of the Capitol dome. I was willing to accept this note for how minor the problem was, that it wasn't distracting and may have limited competition acquiring this note, thus it has also allowed me to enter the $50 denomination range in my St. Louis Federal Reserve District small-sized FRN note collection.

    F-2212H Series of 1934A $1000 FRN
    St. Louis Federal Reserve District
    SN: H 00038289 A
    Printage: 39,600
(As listed in the 3rd edition of U.S. Paper Money, Friedberg)

As you can see, this note is in pretty rough condition. It has all the obvious folds, wear, a bit of soiling from circulation and unfortunately a pin-hole! However this note came to me as a special opportunity to add a high denomination note to my small-sized St. Louis FRN collection. It's something that I don't expect be able to do very often. At least the St. Louis Series 1934A doesn't have a star (*) for this Series, so I can check it off my list. The Series 1928 and Series 1934 do have both stars and non-star issues. Those stars being in very high dollar ranges, upper four and five figures, typically.

The Series 1934 and 1934A $1,000 notes differ from the earlier Series 1928 in that they do not mention payment in gold in the redemption clause.

Yesterday, I received this set of Series 1976 First Day of Issue $2 Federal Reserve Notes with all 50 Bicentennial State Flag Stamps — The note with the Washington State Flag stamp is a nice repeater (05190519).

Here we go again. Today I had a chance to buy some coins and along with the coins came some notes. I don't mind telling you guys what I pay for these, even if its a bit over what I should have. I really need to learn to say no - but usually I just factor it into the overall purchase. For the following notes, I paid 50 dollars. I only wanted to pay 40 just because I have no clue about them but he said how about 50....so it goes.

If you paid $50 for all the notes including the gold certificate, I think you got a great deal!

Yes - it was for all 3 of them. I really didn't want to pay 50 because I wasn't sure on the value of them but I've dealt with this person in the past and we just pick prices that we can both live with, even though sometimes neither of us has a clue about what the item is
