I had a gentleman on craigslist respond to an ad I had put up seeking to buy coins. He had a decent sized collection and I have bought/sold some of the same coins in the past, in addition I checked out fleabay and heritage to find extremely recent sale prices for the exact coins, which are represented by the average to the right of the description. I had calculated a realistic market value of 1962$ for all the coins and offered him 1450$ after previously letting him know I was buying mostly for retail resale and explaining that I thought the offer (profit margin for me) was pretty fair and extremely competitive with what I know local shops pay. He seemed to be disgusted with the offer and I haven't heard back, furthermore my post was instantly flagged down after appraising his coins and making an offer. I do feel I was fair and honest in the deal and suspect the gentleman had overvalued his coins regarding price, but I would appreciate a second opinion from a more experienced dealer.

Thanks green, I appreciate your insight to the situation. I just don't want to get that pawn shop stigma attached to my name if somehow I had messed up.

The figure on the 1836 quarter eagle sounds quite low. Besides that your figures looked ok to me.

At most you could have offered 150$ more. But your offer was not bad. Since he seems to have been really offended yes I think he values those coins more then their true value.

Your quote looks fine. Private sellers add sentimentality to the price and generally ask full retail prices when selling

The only thing I see is the El Cazador stuff. The 4 reales trade around $200 and the 8 reales are around $400 or so each.

Oh....I'm not a dealer, Fishwhacker, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn. :)

Speaking of which, ya wanna see low ball? Go to those shows advertised in the local paper and held at a local hostellerie.....

    Hmmmm...

Well maybe things have changed in the year or so since I sold any. I had a 4 and an 8 in the display boxes I put on EBay and they bought close to those prices respectively.
