I collect mostly nickels and pennies (for now) and then whatever catches my eye. I also save change, I have one of those huge water jugs that I fill with change and then dump occasionally to roll up and take to the coin store to look for new collection pieces. I have been sitting on my floor for about 4 hours sorting the change to roll. And I cannot help myself I have to go through it all again to make sure I didn't miss something I need to finish off my penny and nickel collection or some awesome error coin. It is so tedious!!!! Anyone else have any "problems" with collecting?
Think you have "problems" now lol oh boy wait until you start back dating older coin series expecially in MS and PF grades. Then the issues of time and money come into play. Sooo many coins sooo little time. More importantly MS-65 (gem uncirculated) 1914-D wheat cent cost's how much??? You could buy a small car for that kind of money.
My biggest problem is focus. My interests are varied, and I have a problem deciding on what I want to focus on. I went to one coin show, and went without a plan on what I want to look for. That was a mistake, as I was overwhelmed when I got there and couldn't decide on what I wanted to look at. So I'm hoping I can decide on a plan and make a list of specific things I want before I go to the next one.
My biggest problem is I don't have unlimited funds. If I were Bill Gates rich, coin collecting would be so much more hassel free! Guy
I agree with the financial issues with collecting. Luckily most of my collecting so far has been through roll and change searching and I've done pretty well. I'll think about buying coins eventually, when I do I'll probably laugh at thinking searching was an issue.
My biggest problems are funds and focus. I am constantly finding new medals/coins to collect, which feeds into the funds problem. I am to the point now of needing to sell to collect any more shiny things.
Money, as in not enough. One thing that REALLY annoys me is not being able to complete a collection. As I've gotten older I've learned to be more selective about what I collect. I will never start an SLQ set because there very little chance I'll have the money to buy a decent 1916 and therefore complete it. ("Decent" to me is now XF or better.)
I don't know. It seems no matter how advanced a collector one becomes, there is always that searcher still present. It's one thing to go out and buy a particular piece we see and like. But to roll search is always exciting, not knowing what you will find. Advance within the hobby, but don't lose that excitement a few rolls of coins can bring. Nobody's above that. Guy
For me it would be, I see something I like and I want to get it. Not necessarily for the value but because I don't have a coin from that series. And of course funds for buying coins, I would play the lotto but I'm hoarding all my quarters
Well - mine is patience to find the right coin to go in the collection. I am working several that at times I can find the variety I need - but the coin is either not right for the collection or way over priced. So I have to be patient to find what I want. I no longer roll search - all those got put up so I do not look at them any more. I only needed a few coins to finish some of them, but it was a distraction.
I have all of the above symptoms with each denomination of coins. BUT the reward for me has been outstanding. I've found two 1999 WAMS, And one is a ANACS MS-65 red. seven 1998 WAMS, and twelve 2000 WAMS. Also a 1994 165* rotated die ANACS MS-61. And six complete sets 1959-2008, one being BU with proofs. I've only been collecting since 2006.
I will buy anything small, because just the purchase of something that old is fun, even if its a wheat or something. And if I miss coin shops and other numismatic stuff for a bit, it just kills. Of course, I can scarcely be happier when checking rolls of cents and stuff. Like I said, I can be satisfied for up to maybe a week with a proof wheat or something else small.
My biggest problem is that I always end up running across a coin I must have. Its kind of never ending. My other problem is that I never seem able to get myself to sell anything. When it comes to selling something I cant. I have the mindset of a hoarder when it comes to coins. I have a reason in my head for why every single thing cant be sold. I have let some bullion and junk silver go in the past. But im mainly a hoarder.
Mine used to be my wife finding out how much I spent at an auction. I am happily divorced now and my girlfriend doesn't see any of my bank statements.
I sometimes by collections of friends and family. Recently, I bought about 1,000 coins from a family member and needed to integrate them into my existing collections. This process includes rating the coin, cataloging it into my coin collection spreadsheet, and move coins in books to fill holes and keep the best coins in the best coin books. It can take days for 1,000 coins and can create a little anxiety as I don't like coins hanging around in an unordered state. When the project is completed, I love the feeling of accomplishing the task.
