Just curious of who has unexpectedly found ancient coins they forgot about in the house? Found a Very rough tetradrachm of Antoninus Pius in a box full of papers and such on ancients. Thought I gave it away
....sheepishly raises his hand. I have found them in drawers, baskets, in sofa cushions, on top of dressers, about everywhere you might find a lincoln penny. I am not proud of it.
Since I dont buy in lots I havent had that issue. Pretty much when I get a new coin of any kind and let the newness wear off after 3-5 days it will be put away soon after.
I think my worst was when I found a denari and 5 kushan bronzes in my change jar. I have a large change jar, and think my wife was tidying up. Now I ask her to put any loose coins in a jar on top of my dresser. I had to go through my whole huge change jar just to make sure nothing else was in there. Second worst was probably a Cleopatra VII she found in a shirt pocket and left on the table in the washer/dryer room downstairs. I have already confessed my sins to Monsignor Doug, have admitted I have a problem, and am working on it.
Did you read the comic strip in the Feb. issue of Celator Chris? It reminded me of your posts, if you didnt, check it out.
A denarii? I've also have a few LRB laying around my room and in my desk. I once droped a baggy with a couple uncleaned coins in it. Took me over a year to find it  Turned out that it fell in my junk drawer of my desk. Found an ancient in the washer once too, but it was my moms so I can escape blame on that.
I once dropped a coin while sitting in a recliner chair. After much searching I gave up since the coin was worth less than the chair. Several years (4?) later when rearranging furniture before painting the room I heard a clunk and retrieved the coin. I no longer examine coins while sitting in recliners. I still have the coin but the chair since went to Goodwill. Perhaps it coughed up the coin knowing that I intended to dismember it when it had outlived its useful life.
i can't say that i have done it, but i know one day i will say it. i've dropped a few coins near my dresser. luckily, i've found them all rather quickly!
The room I use most for coin activities has heat registers in the floor. I installed coin catcher filters in them to keep dropped coins from finding the hole. So far - so good.
I have a gas floor heater (don't use it any more) that connects into 2 rooms, including my bedroom that I had to do the same too.
i'm so afraid of that happening that i won't go near tile with my coins. carpet or the bed, no tile! lol
Luckily for me the entire house but the bathrooms and kitchen is carpet. Several of my coins, even my ancients, have gotten to meet the carpet face to face, thank goodness damage free.
Be ESPECIALLY careful with silver coins that feel light. They are mineralized, and will crack at the slightest provocation, (as I can unfortunately personally attest )
this struck me as funny... after threads about do you touch your coins, should a coin be slabbed, etc., we are having a discussion about how to avoid breaking your coins! maybe it's just me, but i find some humor in that.
Well you can pretty quickly tell when you have a silver coin that is crystallized, (better word). Its very light. To be fair, (to me ), I accidentally dropped one just 6 inches and it cracked. It was not a good coin, and the crystallization had already made it porous. Good point, you are right I do advocate handling your coins, so I suppose me admitting breaking a coin is pretty sad. I hope to think the knowledge I have gained by being able to handle them, clean and preserve them makes up for it, but I could just be fooling myself. Chris
I might find one in the washer or dryer some times. If I do drop one its usually in my recliner I use for my computer.
I found a celtic coin which i dectected when I was about 10 years old and I thought I'd lost it when moving house but it was in some boxes that I didn't unpack that were in the attic. A while back also found a 20-30 faceless roman coins and in all of them there was a couple ok bronzes and there was bronze roman with 2 heads on it. I still have not found all the stuff that I remember having!!!
