I have never used them. They finished their first online auction about one year ago - so they are pretty new. http://www.greatcollections.com/kb/Update-Our-First-Auctions-Completed-t93-4.html History - http://www.greatcollections.com/main-about As a seller/buyer - it's nice to have another resource. Are they selling/auctioning only certified or gov't packaged coins?
I have done business with them since day one. It was started by Ian Russel who was CEO of Teletrade. He was able to put into practice all that he had learned good and bad from that 20 year old auction site. He works on a much skinnier margin so sellers get more and buyers pay less. Of particular note is the rapid payment to sellers. I'm usually paid 7 to 10 days following the close of auction. I have found the site particularly refreshing.
Good company. If you sell place your reserves if you buy, do your research. They have attracted some high-end material recenctly like this High Relief which sold @ hammer of $100K: http://www.greatcollections.com/Coi...-Eagle-MCMVII-High-Relief-Flat-Edge-NGC-MS-67
Ian is a good do deal with, I have bought and sold with him several times on GC. I've been dealing with him for years since he come to Teletrade.
I just registered with them. They have a coin I want starting at a really fair price. I only found one other, on ebay, and the seller wants more than 6 times the guide price. Thanks again for all of your input.
Downside with GC is there is no technical information, no description; all of which Heritage Auctions provides free of charge. All you have to go by is the images. And imaging varies in quality greatly from company to company and coin to coin. Eventually we may have truly objective imaging with various lighting options, halogen, point light source, various angles, etc.. If an auction company wanted to hide imperfections, they could easily do it.
Another issue on "Great Collections" is their extremely aggressive internet advertising. Virtually every site I go to, there is the GC ad. There has got to be a better way to establish your name and compete with the others.
