Here is a pic from the seller of a Kidarite I picked up today. Kind of interesting culture, didn't last long. It was formed by Kidara, (duh), and didn't really survive his death. This one was struck 350-385 ad, but there is some debate as to the dates. They lingered on in north India but were supplanted pretty much everywhere else by the Hepthalites. Coin is actually better than pic, with some details in the face and much more on the reverse as this pic shows. Fairly scarce coin, I didn't have a decent one from this culture and it was a hole in my Central Asian holdings.
I got it for $175. Not a horrible price. Like I said its better in hand. I had some money on me at the show, (always dangerous), so I picked up this, a thai boat money piece, and a mexican calendar gold 20 peso coin. I think that day's purchase kind of shows my esoteric collecting habits, lol. Chris
Now we know why I don't have one. I'd want a face on the portrait at that would cost an arm and both legs. This is a coin with low demand but even lower supply.
I know it looks like there is no face detail, sorry for the poor pic. In reality you can see detail especially if you turn it, it just does not photograph well. The seller stated it was a poor strike on the face, which makes sense since it would require the most metal on the coin. I would not have bought it, even in my kind of bored and money in my pocket state, if the face was completely missing. You are right though, in better shape and full clear face, I have seen these go for $500 regularly. They used to be $150 coins about 6 years ago, but that supply dried up, and I haven't seen a nice one for sale for quite some time. Right now there is not one for sale on Vcoins at all.
SO, trying to go through my piles of coins today, and going through my envelopes. I was thinking I was still short a khingila for my Central Asia holdings, since I now have a Kidarite, but just found one. Bought a group of Sassanid from CNG 2 years ago, and had never unpacked them. In there was 2 hunnic coins, one a Khingila. Not the greatest, maybe a gF, but still. Kinda matches the Kidarite. I promised my wife to go through all of my piles and envelopes, but I sure love finding stuff I forgot I had bought, its like buying it for free. I am trying to just sort them all, but not pay too much attention to give myself some pleasure later. Chris
I haven't found the articles. TBH I wouldn't know how to obtain them really. My references for Hunnic is Gobl Hunnic and Michiner. I know what you think of Michiner, but Gobl is in German.
