So, I'm always trying to find new and fun ways to add to my collection. One thing that has always intregued me is the idea of a set of toned silver coins. I love Morgan Dollars...but a set of toners would be way beyond anything I could afford. Plus...I want a set that could be resonably completed. I have been looking online and it seems that silver Roosevelt Dimes (46-64) are fairly easy to find nicely toned. I think a date/MM set of toned coins would be a fun and challenging project without completely breaking the bank. Plus, a while back I picked one up so I already have one example in my collection (I got a PCGS MS66 1964-D). I was thinking of doing an all high grade (which to me means MS65 or better) toned slabbed set (PCGS and NGC only). Of course, I would only buy coins that I believe have attractive toning (not just any toning) What do you think? I don't know if I want to include proofs or not...probably not at first and then maybe add them later. Proof coins tend to tone differently anyway. Here is the coin I already have:
Seems like a worthy endeavor Camaro. Time was, that toners would turn me off. No longer. I've accepted the inevitable march of time....
I'm kind of the same way...it took me a while but I warmed up to them. I'm pretty particular about my toning though.
Nice set to work on, sometimes you can find some colorful Roosevelt Dimes. Another series that tones nicely are the Kennedy Halves, sometimes the 40% ones tones wildly.
Sounds cool. I'm still not a big toning guy. The premiums alot of toners bring doesn't seem worth it to me (No offense to any toned coin collectors). But a toned set of Rosies could be affordable, and be an interesting segment of your collection.
I think it's a good idea. Most of the series can be found with nice colorful toning, in high grade for pretty low prices. The coins with the monster toning will get expensive, but nice attractive colorful toning like the one you posted are fairly common. There are also a lot of Roosies out there with horrible toning(I got stuck with several buying bulk lots to get one or two nice coins) Beware of buying from photos. I think it's a fantastic idea! There are definitely a lot of toned Rosies to choose from. I agree the prices are reasonable, especially if you are happy with 65's. I have seen them get pretty pricey when they are 66 or 67 with FT, and NGC stars.
Exactly...and in my eyes, some of the big monster toning is too much. I like the smaller colorful toning like mine has. There are also a ton of blotchy dark ugly toned coins that I want to completely avoid. I want a variety of color...but I don't want a hideous coin.
Rosy's are a good choice for starting a toned set.. from what I've seen there are a lot of toned one's out there, I guess they are prone to tone in books, etc.... It was my first toned set anyway.
It would be well worth the work. Would be a nice journey along the way and the end result would be your own artistic canvas.
I started a slabbed Ike set PCGS and NGC but after really looking I decided to limit it to PCGS. NGC coins are simply not as good in my experience

its a great idea. i have almost a full set from 46-11 including proofs and sms coins. missing about 40-50 or so. it can be a mission but quite worth it. i have cracked out many slabs to put the coins in my album. so real beauties. if i could only take good photos of coins to show my set.
Yeah,, I'd second that. I've purchased a couple from him and I have to say, what you see in his pics is as damb near to what you will get as possible from looking at a picture of a coin. Only problem is that Shane is getting one heck of a following on the 'bay... he's approaching 'great toning' status. Very hard to compete with all those toning loving bidders ! That said, his coins still don't go off like 'great toning's' do... I swear that dude could put a 3 month old half decayed juiced up painted chicken for sale and get $105's for it !!! Anyway, my point is,,, if I have one... is to be careful buying toned coins. You may find one that you fall in love with, but DO NOT go crazy going after it... unless you have $'s to flush... getting into a bidding war with a toner lover is never a good idea imo.
Don't worry, I don't have dollars to flush...I don't even have cents to flush. I am a senior dental student and have about as much student debt as one can accumulate. My coin budget is very limited...lol.
