Hello, I was checking my pocket change today, and I found this. I have no idea what it is, or what "420" represents. It's a 2006 North Dakota P state quarter, and on the obverse, and the reverse are the numbers "420" clearly stamped into the quarter. One side appears closer and mashed together, above the Buffalo, and the reverse shows it spread out across Washington's forehead. There's no other damage, nothing around the numbers, it just seems as if they were stamped in. Any help on figuring out or explaining it would be awesome, Thanks!!
420 is a slang term for "marijuana". Pot head couples love getting hitched on April 20th and yada yada. You know what I mean lol
I don't know if this is relavent to this coin but I do know that 420 is police code for narcotics. It is also refered to as the international pot smoking time. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
Yeah, I figured it related to that.. do you think it was post-mint stamped by someone? I don't know how the heck you would do that.
Yeah, it was hammered in at one point PMD. All it takes is chisel dies with the number on the end of them.
They're counterstamps allout. Someone had a set of punches and decided to put a number on the coin for who knows what reason. It may have some meaning to him, but certainly not to us. The counterstamping of coins was very common in the 19th century particularly. Company names were applied to coins for advertising purposes, individuals personalized coins with their names, or political messages were struck on them. Your counterstamp would have no value other than as a curiousity. Bruce
My guess is that somebody had some kind of stamping machine at a festival and people had their coins stamped as a token. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
I see, thanks for clearing that up, I thought I was holding a small fortune! haha, it's still a cool piece to hang on to.
I know of no police department that uses 420 as a code for narcotics. They may use it casually when talking with each other but it's not an official code. Hence, that is not where pot heads got the term "420". A group of stoners back in the 70's used that as a time to meet after school and smoke. In today's terms, it then went viral. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=420
Probably ended up using it in a snack machine after they inevitably got the munchies lol. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
DOUBT IT!!!! It was definitely some pot head working at the mint did it on April 20th, and you got the only one I bet. Just kidding!!
LMAO -- Nice find man! Thats a rare run- they only made one 420 quarter that year. Funny stoners, lol.
If this were the case I would expect the numbers to NOT be all bunched up on the reverse which to me says, "Hand Stamped". 420 may be the code for a narcotics call but it's also Adolph Hilters birthdate. Its also the day that the Columbine School shooting took place. Its also the date that the Deepwater Horizon Oli well exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. However, the significance of 420 on your coin is only known to whomever punched them into the coin.
"Mary Jane"? (You and I have to be almost the same age.:yes Just to educate the youngsters: "Slang for marijuana. It originates from the Spanish language. Literally Mari-Mary Huana/Juana-Jane"
