Imagine you have a coinbudget from $50 per month.
You buy some coins with it so your collection grows.
Then one day you have the opertunity just for 1 time to spend $350 on coins.

would you still buy the coins you always bought before, or are you going for some special (more expensive) ones?

I'd go for one magnificant piece. Might I suggest a nice trade dollar? For $350, you can get a nice common date one.

When I want a coin that goes beyond my monthly budget, I don't spend each month until I have enough to buy it, then the normal spending resumes. ;)

For the most part, if I do go beyond my budget, I go for whatever interests me, I might buy more of what I'm already collecting or something completely different.

If you can spend around $200 or so at once I suggest you get at least one Morgan CC dollar. Not for investment purposes or so but just to have one Carson City mint mark.

Just a matter of opinion really. Surprisingly, I have lots of Morgans in my collection but not one CC mint mark one and I just don't have any current desire to go seek any either. ;)

Buy something $300+ that you like but don't rush into the purchase.

    Hello Koen,

What kind of coins do you like to collect?

For example, if you collect modern Euros, then I might recommend one coin but if you collect USA civil war tokens, then I might recommend something else.

I think in any case, I would recommend that you get a nice coin in the $300+ range and just be careful to select one that you really-really like. Don't buy a coin that has a problem that bothers you because it will always bother you. Take your time & get something that will make everyone that sees it envious. :smile

You might look for a coin in an attractive high grade that is not normally found in high grade.

I won't tell you what exactly to get, but if you have a windfall of 350 that you can spend on something, make the item you buy special, not just a lot of smaller ones you can get normally.

You might identify one of the key dates in a series you want to collect, then find a grade that you can live with and go for it. Knowing you have one of the key dates as you fill a collection can keep you from feeling you will never get to your goals.

    It's yours to enjoy!

But all the coins I buy are special, regardless of price... :thumb:

I agree. Koen should consider buying one magnificent piece.

I recall going to an ANA show several years ago with $350 to spend. At that time, I made the decision to get a proof Barber half dollar. I searched the bourse floor and all I could focus upon were proof Barber half dollars. I picked the nicest one I could find in my price range. It is free of hairlines & I'm still happy with it today.

See if you can attend a large coin show & take your $350 with you.:)

For me it would depend if that one magnificent coin was on sale?, last one the dealer has?, a rare coin you may never even see again? then get that. If the coin is going to sit there a while or one you can get anywhere in that grade then go with more bang (coins) in as close to UNC or UNC for your buck.

    thx all for the advice.
still have to wait untill the beginning of may, but now i have an idea.

i was already thinking to do what icerain said with the morgan cc before i posted the question, so propably it will be something like that.

when i have it i will ask advice before i buy just to be sure

i was thinking to spend around 200 for the morgan and the rest some upgrades and holefillers.

    thx again for the advices

Since you like US coins maybe a nice AU58 Half Cent mintages are low and prices can be reasonable. But really buy what you like

  18. I would suggest buying the best 1921 Peace dollar you can find. You can easily get a very nice AU58 and likely even an MS63. :). TC

Its just my opinion, but I would argue against buying hole fillers. There has never been a coin that I bought as a "hole filler" that I liked. The whole point of collecting is buying something you like, so I think "hole fillers" are a waste of money. Instead of buying 5 hole fillers, buy one coin you like, and wait to fill the other 4 holes.

Rule of thumb, if you do not love the coin the day you buy it, you never will. If you do not love it, why are you wasting your precious hobby money buying it? Don't be ruled by "holes", collect coins you love. :)

Since I am a silver stacker, I would probably look towards bullion. Maybe an ATB puck or something nice that is usually out of my price range.

The other day my coin guy offered me slabbed MS63 1880 or so date Morgan CCs for $190 each. If I wanted all 4 he had in the safe we could talk about a lower price. I passed because they have the same silver content a a junk Morgan that I buy at melt.
