I saw a nice type I $20 Liberty at an auction the other night and made a conservative bid on it because I could not examine it in person: http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot.asp?auction=3235&lot=2673 It sold for strong money even though it was in an ANACS holder. I did not see any wear on the coin, but it is hard to make that call with an auction lot. When people have a choice, why do they select ANACS for high value coins? I have had $20 LIBs that were in PCGS and NGC holders as AU58 and were graded MS62, etc.. Probably not everyone who wants to get their coin graded knows which service to send it to. If they use the "free" grading at an auction company, they will get it back from grading a lot faster through ANACS. Anyone else have thoughts on why people select a particular grading service?
I have to think that this particular coin may have been wiped a time or 2. The reverse shows what I interpret as UNC details with full luster while the obverse shows a little luster hiding near the stars. This to me would be indicative of a coin that may have been stored in a coin cabinet or coin board and wiped a time or 2. The reason it is in this holder is because the top 2 see it like I do and would probably not grade the coin.
Thanks. I examined a rare date gold coin one of the top buyers was offering at the Pittsburgh show that was in the same TPGS holder as MS62, if memory serves. I showed it to a sharp coin expert before making a decision. He said the coin had "white noise", i.e., subtle issues that would probably present a problem if cracked out. I think ANACS has some type of guarantee to replace a coin with a more acceptable one under certain circumstances, not monetary though to my knowledge. If it costs someone money to "guarantee" a coin, you have a different set of standards. This is always going to be a limitation of auction buying. You cannot examine the coin at various angles with a point or halogen light source.
A lot of them do so because they don't know any better. Over the years there been a great many people visit this forum and many others who had no idea that there was any difference at all between any of the grading companies. They thought them all to be equal and using the same grading standards. Some do so purely for cost consideration. Some do so because the other TPGs offer different services than NGC and PCGS offer. Some even think that ANACS is better than NGC and PCGS. Still others do so because they know they have no chance of getting the coin slabbed by NGC or PCGS, but they also know that if it is in a slab, like that ANACS slab, that they will be able to sell it to somebody who doesn't know any better. Bottom line, there's lots of different reasons why some people choose one TPG over another. Not just one.
Thanks GDJMSP! Lost Dutchman has either better eyesight or better computer imaging than I do, or both!
It's not so much better eyesight or a better computer as it is knowing what what you are looking at when you see it.
Or some people, like myself, can't afford to shell out the costs of grading that PCGS and NGC charge.
I like ANACS for Roosie varieties. Perhaps I'm naive but I think that, in general, ANACS is pretty accurate - especially the older slabs. That being said if two coins were offered both the same quality and graded the same by ANACS and NGC, I'd pick the NGC one because of the ease of resale.
I love OLD ANACS holders... the small ones. I used to send everything to them back in the day. These days their standards are laughable in comparison and it is well known in the community that they tend to slab coins that the other companies will put in problem holders.
It's not about the slab. It could be in a SGS holder and it's no different than if it were in a PCGS holder. Look at the coin, not the plastic. People may not know any better and pay big money, but thats only because they're uneducated, not because the coin is worth it. Guy
Teletrade prices have risen dramatically lately. Great if you're selling, but in a lot of cases prices are higher than ebay now. As for TPG, I always find it absolutely absurd to read on the PCGS board people who will adamantly state that they will never look at, much less buy, a coin in an NGC holder, not to mention anything else. Kool-aid they call it.
I worked with a fellow at a warehouse once where after a heated discussion developed with workers, about how one company's spark plugs were better than another, I don't know whether it was Champion or AC Delco, became agitated and said as soon as he got home he was going to pull all of the Champion or AC plugs out and put in the other!!! He was bound and determined not to have inferior plugs in his car. And now we have the Quattros, "Platinum" and many other varieties that are new and improved!
