If so, what were the results? I may use this on some of the common-date coins I have (NOT COLLECTING), just to tinker around, and what not, as I plan on putting them through a Coinstar machine anyways. Any before & After pics?
It is not a panacea, but it helps usually. Do a search and you will find more than one set of pictures. Also, when badthad shows up, I am sure he can add to it. He is the inventor of it.
Here's a link with some typical results pictured: http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/files/images/Verdi-Care-Typical-Results.pdf
Funny enough that you mention this. I did try it on a rather scarce Chinese coin with verdigris and even within a couple of hours, it worked wonders! A lot quicker than olive oil method. I still need a bit of work on it but I will show before and after.
I have a nice (XF-40) 1804 Plain 4 w/Stems that developed a nasty case of verdigris on the Obverse. I used BadThad's Verdi-Care™ on the coin and it looks great and the verdigris hasn't spread. I was thinking about sending it to NGC or PCGS to see if they detect the treatment...but never got around to it.
Thats intersting, lol. Thats why I wouldn't use it on any really collectable coins, juts on the ones that I plan to keep.
To get graded, why have them get caught or what not by the goofy coin sniffer if you are trying to sell it. If I want to keep a coin, I will use the VERDI-CARE. If not, I will let it be, and the buyer do what he/she feels they want to do.
The "coin sniffer" is not used on all coins submitted for grading. It is only used on those coins submitted under the Secure Plus grading tier. With all other grading tiers it is not used at all. But like I said, in some cases use of Verdi-Care can be detected by the normal grading process, normally due to altered surfaces.
In the case of my coin, I didn't feel I had any other choice; I was afraid the verdigris would destroy the it. The coin now has a pleasant appearance and the verdigris seems to have stopped. I'll post a picture if I can find what I did with it.
And that's why the product was invented, and yes it does what it is intended to do. And I suppose it is worth noting that the Verdi-Care itself may not cause any surface alteration. The damage, or surface alteration, is often done by the verdigris.
I see. I will go ahead, and get the trial bottles, then get the full ones. Or should I just go straight for the full bottle?
I found the coin and took some pics...I guess my memory overgrades a bit...I didn't recall all that surface damage! Too bad I don't have a "before" picture to show how bad the coin looked before Verdi-Care™, but trust me...she was GREEN! I treated it one (1) time...about a year ago.
splintercellsz - There's gobs of pictures out there, just do a google search. edited If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
The PCGS sniffer might be able to detect the surface conditioner.....assuming they have added VC to their library. A rinse with water or acetone will take care of that, but the product is best left on the surface and I don't recommend removal. Regardless, the product was designed for use on problem coins that probably wouldn't slab anyway.
