I've heard several say they drop off food gifts from time to time. I did bring in donuts to my pick up bank one time but the subtext of the response was that of confused surprise and disinterest. I don't think anyone had done that before. Are open items like bakery donuts frowned upon b/c they could have been tampered with? Maybe I should go with chocolates or some factory sealed product? Do you do this at your dump and pick up banks? how often and how much do you spend? Do you leave a business card and ask for contact on good stuff, or is that to transparent? I've built a few decent relationships, but I don't feel like I have anyone "looking out for me."
At my bank, the manager is a guy so chocolates are out of the question! He always asks me "Do you ever find anything in those boxes"? One day he volunteered info and stated that he found 7 indian heads in a box of pennies (pretty impressive if you ask me!) but told me he never finds any silver and keeps the funky stuff that comes in (I dont know what that means because this is a smaller branch inside a grocery store and they do not even keep a coin counter/sorter at this location, so they wont take a bunch of coinage!) So i said to him one "You collect coins?" and he told me that he had a box in his basement where he kept all his finds from the bank. I told him when i come to pick my half dollars up i would have something for him. Right there i knew what i could give him. I ponied up a Walking liberty half and i think he enjoyed that. So when i do my teller a favor i will drop him some silver for taking care of me.
hum...I don't want to give them silver, I want them to give me silver! LOL Interesting how different things are area to area. I've been told many time by tellers in my area that they are strictly not allowed to take or keep any coins from the bank. They all seem to take that rule very seriously.
I'm just friendly and make them laugh... I feel like they would think I was hitting on them if I brought them anything seeing as I am 26 and they look to be about my age. As I mentioned in another thread I am in a small southern town so they are nice and I am just nice back, and I told them to let me know if my coin buying habits get to be too much for them because I certainly don't want to be a pain in anyone's butt.
Nope, same rules, I just have to deposit it, he put it in his till and then it was free game! He told me he could not take anything from me as a gift. Lets see....A worn silver half thats worth about 11 dollars in silver for countless boxes of halves? I think it is a good investment! It just worked that way, he was into coins also so i could skip the donuts and victoria secret gift cards, lol
No, it's the till I am talking about. They can not pull any coins out of thier till and keep them for themselves, even if they replace it with equal face value. That would make me crazy to have a silver coin sitting there and not be able to have it. It does leave me more relaxed as a customer though, knowing I have a fair shot of getting something if it comes in.
If you want to go the gift card route, a good idea is to see what restaurants are nearby. For example, get them a Subway or Tim Hortons gift card that will buy a few lunches or some bagels for the group. I think most tellers are able to accept these.
Thank you!!! you joke but the light bulb went off! I think it would be really fun to hand out some mesh bags of chocolate coins or something like that! -edit- should probably find something that looks a little more high end then those regular bulk bin choc coins though.
DOes anyone know the policy at TD Bank for this? I always see tellers at both of my dump banks with silver quarters or dimes in their trays, they keep them on the bottom of the stack and they're usually there for days at a time. One time I asked the girl if she was holding "that quarter on the bottom" for someone, and she said yes. Is it worth asking the tellers if they'd be willing to sell them to me, or should I not risk tipping off/annoying the tellers at my dump banks?
If you've got cherrypicking tellers at a TD bank, I'd just give up on the bank and make it a dump branch.
This time of year, I will usually bring in a box of Girl Scout Cookies to my dump and buy banks. They are factory sealed, for a good cause, and usually spark conversation. I have found most (not all of course) tellers, once they get an idea of what you are doing, are pretty helpful. If they know you at least by sight, and you can spend a little time chit chatting, and (most important) come in when they are not busy - tellers are usually pretty cool.
Girl scout cookies, I like it! How often do you gift a bank? once every quarter or so? anyone have luck getting tellers to call you when something comes in?
I think I could. I posted a pic of as an example of a guy doing it but it got deleted as homoerotic? I guess that was an act of kindness for the rest of you. My wife and I thought it was funny though. I think the ladies would have given that guy all the silver he wanted. So in summary thank you ikandiggit, for provoking me. I now have 3 demerits with the founder of coin talk. Pretty sure I won't get my badge now, no matter how many cookies I sell.
Yea unfortunately both of my current dump banks have tellers that put silver quarters/dimes on the bottom of their coin stacks in the tray, and of course I'm too afraid of screwing up my relationship with either branch by asking them to sell them to me. Sucks that those are pretty much the only 2 banks where I regularly see silver in the trays
At a local credit union I have a teller that calls me when their halves bag fills up on the counting machine. I guess it's a start and it's more than most do.
