I bought a Silver Eagle off Ebay out of pure randomness, and ya I over payed but I enjoy the coin greatly. However I dont like the slab its in. Does the slab add any value or should I break it out and put it in an air tite? Heres the coin: http://www.ebay.com/itm/270919233626?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
Its honestly pure choice. I do not own a single slab. I hate having coins locked up. I wouldnt buy one in a slab but if i did i would probably keep it that way. But then again i would never look at it so i would probably break it out
Slabs do make storage easier. If you're keeping this in a safe deposit box, I've found that slabs fit quite nicely and offer superior protection to other storage methods that I've tried. That said, I have less than 1% of my coins in slabs. They just take up a TON of room.
If you didn't like the slab, you could have bought one for a tiny sum over melt not in a slab. Heck you could have bought a whole roll and they would all look pretty much the same.
I don't like slabs at all, but I would keep it in the slab since it is already there. Also, you can just buy a raw coin from the same company for $40.99, shipped, and not even go through ebay. Or, you can get another slabbed coin just like the coin you have from the same company for $43.99 shipped. http://www.paradisemint.com/2012-1oz-Silver-American-Eagle_p_2693.html http://www.paradisemint.com/2012-1oz-SILVER-EAGLE-NGC-Brilliant-Uncirculated_p_2795.html
You could have got a graded MS69 directly from Paradise Mint for $47.99 http://www.paradisemint.com/2012-1o...GC-MS69-Early-Releases-Flag-Label_p_2759.html
i, like cman, don't own a single slab. however, if i should ever purchase a coin in a slab, it would be set free ASAP. no hesitation. as for ASEs... i don't view them as coins. i only see bullion. so any kind of premium, other than a buck or two because dealers want to make a profit, is a waste to me. all this is just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth.
I also see ASE's as bullion. I might get a proof for my type set but other than that i like to hold them. lol
since it's not a numerical grade I don't see the sense in buying it but what i would do is sell it, should get a few extra bucks over a loose coin and then buy a raw one and pocket the diff. i had 3 like that from a promotoin (just slabbed gem bu) a big dealer was running a few years ago and sold those and got 4 raw coins.
I say keep it in the slab. If it bothers you that much wait until silver goes higher and see if you can flip it and maybe break even. In the meantime get a raw one, I think they're going for about $38 when I checked on Friday.
Since the label serves no purpose other than to promote ParadiseMint.com, and there's no grade to it, I would. It's only a 1 oz. bullion worth melt.
Free it. Also in the future, just buy them raw from any number of dealers who offer them for a few dollars over melt value since buying overpriced in a slab like this adds no actual value to them.
Leave it in. People can claim and complain that the slab adds no "value" but you bought it and paid extra, right? I see 15 other bids placed over its raw "value" too. Would I pay extra, absolutely not, but the fact remains that others will. Just because one or one thousands other people see no premium, there will always, always, always be some people who will. At the very least the slab opens up a broader market if you ever choose to sell. Silver would need a nice jump for you to break even, so why not play the hand you have and hope for the best.
I agree with what books said. Plus if you crack it only to put in an airtight now your just adding to the cost. The slab will protect it as good as an airtight.
All these statements are correct. It's not actually graded, just a promo which you paid more for than if you went to Paradise mint and bought it from them. You paid a premium for their advertising only. Crack it, and don't buy a slabbed one unless it's numerically graded. Now, if it were an MS70, different story.
