I agree with CoinGeezer. I'm not looking to get into a bidding war so I wait until near the end to see what the bid is up to at that time. If the bid is still at a level that I'm interested in then I'll bid. If not then pass on the item. I don't see anything wrong with "sniping". A bid is a bid no matter when you place it.
Absolutely right!! Ebay isn't a game it's serious business to me and if I want a coin I'm gonna get it which ever way works. If that means I'm gonna upset somebody who isn't being realistic about the internet then that's the way it's gonna be.
I don't snipe or getting into bidding war these days since you often end up overpaying (late bidders always end up having to pay more due to min bid reqs kills you in large auctions) . I usually bid on items when they are listed immediaetly with fair value of what i am willing to pay for the coin. If i get outbidded i let it go has worked well for me so far.
I snipe. If I lose, I lose. I find if I don't snipe, I wind up getting caught in the heat of the moment and then pay too much. Sniping gives me one chance at it and at my maximum bid.
Keep in mind if you are sniping if auction gets revised you would not be alerted about the change in auction listing, in a hypothetical scenario you could have set your sniping amount 4 days prior to auction end and auction could have been revised a day or two before it ends. The bidder who is sniping would not know about it and ebay will side with seller in this situation since you bidded after the revision.
Good point. I had not considered that the lot description or terms might be changed before Bidnapper bids on my behalf.
I snipe the old fashioned way and don't use sniping software which, as you point out, has its limitations.
I find it interesting that some people on here actually feel that snipers are bad people. We don't know if we're sniping the coin from a teary eyed 10 year old kid or not. We want the dang coin and that's the bottom line. Sure, if I'm at a coin club auction I will not bid against a YN but that's a different story and ebay is not a coin club. Warning: If you bid on ebay prepare to have your coins sniped cause there's a ton of us snipers.
I wouldn't give a break to a YN. Let them learn the ropes early, say I. If I really want a coin, no young punk is gonna stand between me and the object of my numismatic lust!
One of our own y/ns posted a thread where he was whining because he bid on ebay and then spent the money before he paid for his purchase. He was upset because the seller (after giving him some leeway) cancelled the sale to him. Too bad, so sad. Live and learn.
i snipe late at night when everyone else is asleep and theres nobodyy else to snipe on me. i call it ninja sniping. cody
