I actually do not own a single Morgan Dollar. Recent threads/Morgans comming into the pawnshop have sparked an interest. What are your thoughts on this Morgan? I really am lost in the woods here. I am attracted to the look of the DMPL? Lightly toned around the rim. I know this is ANACS, but what do you think?
Solid coin! Though, ANACS mirror-depth standards (as 6-7 inches qualifiying as "DMPL) aren't equivilant to that of PCGS's (8-12in.) or NGC's (I believe it's 8-10in. or so), they can still fetch a pretty sum. ANACS used to certify coins with superb mirror depth with a label reading "UDMPL", meaning that the coin had or exceeded a mirror depth of 12 inches. Still, your coin, judging only by contrast, looks DMPL by current top-tier TPG standards. :thumb: -Brian
DMPL's are remarkable but every smallest imperfection is highlighted. Low grade DMPL's are really tough for me. I know others feel differently, but I'd rather have a crazy-lustrous Morgan, full of cartwheel, than a scuffed-up DMPL. Lance.
Any Morgan thats DMPL is a nice looking coin, just make sure you don't have a lamp nearby. It might blind you.
Another point for you is it's an Old Anacs and the newer the DMPL the better the mirrors. As they have increased the standards on them and I bet that would only get a PL from NGC or PCGS.
The PCGS requirement for DMPL is reflectivity at 6 inches - page 75 of their grading book. The requirement for NGC was always 8 inches, but I can no longer find it on their web site to prove it to you. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that PCGS and ANACS had the same requitements, while NGC had tougher requirements just like they do with all of the other special designations.
Absolutely 100% correct! NGC does have higher standards for most designation coins. FBL, FB, etc, etc. This is an excellent point that collectors should understand. Just to add another example, it is much easier to get the FBL designation on a Franklin graded by PCGS than NGC. PCGS concerns themselves only with the bottom lines whereas NGC looks at the bottom and mid bell lines.
I do not deal with the other designations, just the DMPL and in the coins I look at I don't believe NGC to be tougher than PCGS. They may say it but doubt they follow it. Right now is a little different with 6-8 inches barely getting PL's in some cases as the TPG's seem tough right now on DMPL.
I agree with you there, marks show up more but the coin posted looks nice from the pics provided but would need to see in better light to know
Cut the crap. Does it look good in hand? Are you comfortable with the price? You and you alone are at the controls here my friend.....
Agreed, my friend, and is why I said "most". The exception should have been noted considering the thread subject, thank you.
