The US Mint just updated it's product schedule to include a 2012 Birth Set to be released on 3/13/12. Does anyone know what this includes? If not, humorous speculations are welcome. :smile. TC

How desperate are they to make money? I find this quite sad to be honest. If I wanted a birth year set, I would buy a set and write my birth year on it. Not anything like that. That is pathetic.
here's what it includes: Each set includes a proof Kennedy half-dollar, the first America the Beautiful[SUP]®[/SUP] quarter released for the year, a Roosevelt dime, a Jefferson nickel, and a Lincoln cent coin, each bearing the “S” mint mark of the United States Mint at San Francisco..also an area for you to write a note/picture of the newborn
I guess the US Mint decided to copy other world Mints that sell Birth sets. Why not just buy a regular proof set instead? Might be more expensive but definitely a better set. Come on US Mint be more original!!!
Do you ever wonder how these things will be seen in a couple hundred years? Imagine the 2212 auction listing in your mind's eye...... Lot 123 Ancient Birthday Coin Set graded XXXXX.XXXXX from the area known as the United States during the Obama period at the beginning of the 21st Century we have a complete set of 2012 Birthday coins in original Birthday presentation case. This is one of only a few intact birthday presentation cases which has been remarkably preserved with none graded higher. Assuming the English language is still being used, one of earliest references for this sale in 2212 will undoubtedly be /www.cointalk.com/1380761.
A beautiful combination of proof coins that will someday carry some value in one hundred years or so. Sure, the mintage is quite high, but these are OVER 100 Years old!!! This is truly the set you want to have to have it complete. Feebay will have this one all over now! I personally think it will have a higher mintage and won't be worth much. I would honestly be surprised if it does skyrocket in price. I honestly think it is just a marketing ploy.
It would be nice if the U.S. mint got the right idea and actually produced a specially designed coin for each birth year like we see some other countries doing i.e. . Simply putting together some common coins in 'generic' birth year packaging is moronic, if someone wanted these coins for a birth year set they could just buy a mint set for the year. But as usual the U.S. mint is behind the times and it seems they aren't even capable of minting beautiful coins any longer without recycling past designs for the most part. Having children I enjoy the thought of buying a special coin type gift for them but when other countries offer a choice of a truly nice set some of them being minted from a precious metal (I.E. my wife and I purchased UK Britannia gold coins for our children's birth years) I prefer that to common every day U.S. coins in cheap packaging that most likely will never be anything more than a novelty. If for instance the U.S. mint produced something similar to the Canadian coin above available in silver as above and perhaps gold and proof versions also maybe they'd peak some real interest versus just trying to pass off the same old coins in 'special packaging'.
More expensive yes, but it would contain all the 2012 coins, ten more coins than this set and seven dollars more in face value.
