really. it's a nice piece of history for sure and looks better than a couple of the 5's. If it were compared to a 3 or 2 it's quite evident. Bad pics maybe, metals are tough

i read that. So maybe me seeing 65's that didn't look quite as good has something to it after all. I am far from an expert. This is pcgs grade. Best thing is either way, doesn't matter much, as i got a ridiculous deal from my LCS, below sheet, which imo is a great deal for a piece of history. However there was a stint for saints from 00 -08 i believe, where they'd have graded my old sock a MS had i sent it in.

It's definitely above AU I would say.

PCGS makes a comment in their grading book.

" The only St. Gaudens double eagles that do not have luster breaks on the breast and knee, usually caused by contact with other coins, are the Proofs and counterfeits ! "

Those are the exact words. Problem is, I know for a fact it is not true. Anybody that has looked at a lot of Saints knows it is not true. But it sure provides a great excuse for grading AU coins as MS though doesn't it ?

A few small nicks, but I have no problem seeing this coin in a MS64 holder. :thumb: I didn't respond earlier because I have seen OP's coin on at least one or more other sites and I didn't want to spoil the fun.

This coin is a great example for why you shouldn't grade strictly from photos. The first set of photos makes the coin look like it's been through too many chemical baths. However, the second set shows that the coin has luster. Anyone who has taken coin photos knows you can make a coin look as great or as horrible as you want by adjusting the lighting and the angle. I recently took some photos of gold coins using a newer brighter lighting set up, and it made any coin under MS63 look like someone attacked it with a machete. :pencil: It was not pretty at all. :bangg: On the other hand, the MS64 and up gold under that lighting really pops.

grade my coin or what's my coin worth are some of the best reads on all the forums, they go in all sorts of fascinating directions. As far as i'm concerned, i think it's a great, beautiful coin and am happy with it, mostly b/c at the end of the day, for me it's about the deal and history.

It is however interesting to read the posts and try to understand what's what and people's takes on things. And as for what's my coin worth. A picture really isn't a good way to give somebody a grade, imo. As usc mentioned lighting can make all the difference and i've learned it does.

Usually a lurker for the most part but figured i'd have a bit of fun with this.

I do have a question for GDJMSP. Have you ever seen a graded coin in which you actually agree with the grade? I mean, with out some sort of arbitrary caveat, statement or claim that you use to imply it to be a sham, not a true grade, fake, etc etc? That seems to be your MO and am just curious how you know so much?

I'm not answering this for Doug as he is quite capable of that himself.

I do have a question for you.

Do you believe every TPG graded coin to be 100% accurate, or do you take the opinion one paid for at face value as just that, an opinion?

    A Beautiful Specimen!!

You are correct, as I have many specimens of this coin, and I know of several in my possession PCGS and NGC certified MS65 that aren't as nice. TPG MS65 certified will often have field and device "chatter", "nicked" rays, upper wing edge nicks, and "bag rub" with non-uniform luster.

Collectors often undergrade this coin type, generally being only acquainted with the modern Eagles, forgetting or not knowing the differences in production handling of this almost Century Old vintage coin.

The only coin that I can remember to be somewhat comparable to modern Eagles was a coin returned as questionable origin from the TPGs'.

    Great Choice!!

Now that I can see a lot of the luster, it is definitely a higher grade.

Absolutely not, people could be having a bad day and give it a 2 or having a good day b/c they just got engaged and figured they "spread the joy" and throw a 5 on there, or they may just suck. Which is why i'm asking. I'll take knowledge any way i can get it. And he is more often than not the dissenting voice, hence the question. I'm just calling it the way i see it. Most on here have a deeper well of knowledge, i'll have a sip when i can.
