So i have had this for about a month 9 bought it with about 15 other halfs and quarters in an ebay lot)but just have not had the means to take decent pictures. I cant believe the amount of doubling! The mint mark alone has me baffled because nothing in the Cherrypickers guide 5th Vol 2 covers the mint mark. The only thing that might come close is the FS-25-1964D-801 (025) on page 215. They are definitely not similar as you can see from these pictures. Anyone seen this one before?
It doesn't look like a doubled die. Machine doubling/die deterioration doubling. http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/OtherFormsOfDoubling.htm
bump, new quarter, think this one is a doubled die. Bear with me i am trying to locate my first doubled die. This one is a 64 quarter Can i get an expert opinion? Hoping its Doubled Die, and not the let down above me!
Correct. Machine Doubling is also refered to as Strike Doubling. That's exactly what your first coin is, as already concluded. Your second one's more interesting. It does resemble the DDR-002 quite a bit. Unfortunately, I'm no expert. What I do know is, if it were infact the DDR #2, it'd certainly be a terrific find! -Brian EDIT: Your second coin is a Philadelphia strike, correct? Just want to be certain since your first coin was a 'D'.
Not too sure, guys. Did y'all check out what the DDR #2 looks like? I wasn't able to find any photos online to provide in my response. -Brian
No. I'm going by what I see.... Flat shelf-like, some die deterioration and no notching. Could be wrong though. There's a lot of glare in the pics.
If your coin Au or better send to Wexler or Potter.the $10-15.00 fee they charge my yield you DDR. But to my eyes it looks like MD/machine doubling But from a few photo no one is an expert unless they work for SGS. ff-topic: But did have everyone who at this say no it no a C rev but I sent Wexler & here what I got$12.00 plus 45.00 to have Pcgs grade it.
Even if they are machine doubling pieces, you are certainly in the right direction. You just have to know the difference, and I think the Cherrypicker's guide has a small test toward the back of the book to help you differentiate between machine doubling and actual doubled die strikes.
My picture taking sucks. I took in the fact that the first was machine doubling, so i compared the two and this one does have "roundness" especially the first "R" in quarter. Im trying to pick up on these as im finding quite a few (i buy lots of pre 65 quarter lots and i get a lot of 64's that have doubing". For MS70 it is a Philidelphia strike! The doubling is only noticeable at the top of the "U" thru the "E"
Having nice equipment for photos would be nice. But the lower end point and shoots can work too. Whatever you do, just have patience. I've had to take photos of one coin several dozen times to get the focus and details correct.
Looked past it Well I looked thru the cherrypickers guide last night and must of looked over this one! Page 212 in 5th edition volume 2 is definitely what I have brian! I just picked it back up today and my quarter has the exact characteristics as DDR-002, up to the point it almost looks like the same coin except my "U" in quarter has more definition! Thanks again! Funny because I picked it up in one of those "plaque collections". This will mark my first cherrypickers find! I bought this for melt no premium attached!
Absolutely! I am not saying you were wrong either, with the picture I posted anythings possible. I need to buy a dslr camera. Unfortunately right now im at work til 10:30 central time, I will focus on TRYING to take better pics of it tonight, maybe if I focus on single letters instead...Worst case I can bring it to work tomorrow and put it under a microscope connected to a tv and snap a picture (i work at a machining shop)! Thanks for your input also!
