The U.S. mint is going to sell a set with a proof version of the coin with a dog tag for $51.95 This set has a maximum mintage of only 50,000 and a maximum 100 per household:eek:
The proof coin itself will still sell separately so the actual coin will have a mintage of much more then 50,000

No to the Infantry, but I do like the looks of the Star-Spangled Banner coin coming out later this year.

At 50,000 i can see this set shooting up to around $100 with the hype and being a good item to flip but long tearm i see this set selling for not much more then the coin in the normal box. With the maximum of 100 i see these being bought up by relatively few people that could create the illusion of rarity.

The only thing is they are still going to be selling the same proof coin as available in this set which is limited to 50,000 without the dog tags separately. And the maximum mintage across all product options for this set plus the uncirc version and proof version combined is a max of 350,000. So 300,000 more coins how many of those will be of the exact same proof coin available in the defenders set is the unknown. I'll still probably pick up this set as I like the coin design and it's only two dollars more versus just buying the proof.

The issue with commemoratives is way more often than not, they end up being a losing proposition in terms of price appreciation. Even the coins that are expected to do great things end up falling flat on their face. So, I don't even consider value increase when I look at commemoratives anymore. Rather, I decide if I like the eye appeal of the coin. That way, if the coin never appreciates and maybe even depreciates in the future, the worst case is I still have a coin whose design I like.

I agree with treehugger. Most if not all modern commemoratives have not lived up to any hype concerning future price appreciation. If you're looking at the coin as an investment I say look elsewhere. If you like the design then I say go for it.

I'm planning to pick up the regular proof and unc versions. The set with dog tag doesn't hold too much appeal for me. It's just another way for the mint to try and make more money from the collector community. That's just my opinion of course :)

Would like to get +30 of the Infantry coin as gifts. Could care less about the dog tags. Not a big fan of the obverse. The real seller here for me is the cross-rifles on the reverse.

A guy could set up at the PX at Ft Benning, put the coin in an AirTite, and glue it to a piece of wood and make a fortune. ;)

In the Air Force it's BX(base exchange). Maybe other branches are different. PX(post exchange)?

Yup, the Army it's the PX. Went there all the time when I was a contractor for the DoD and Army at Ft. Hood.

  15. I am probably going to pass on the Infantry offering and likely go for the Star Spangled Banner commemoratives. TC

I'll buy one of the uncirculated versions. These tend to be worth more later on because more people buy the proof version resulting in lower mintage numbers for the uncirculated coins. Plus with the proof versions, you have to scrub and polish them constantly to keep them shiny.

This guy will buy one proof and one uncirculated example of the offering. While the set profiled by the OP does hold some appeal to me, my purchases of commems tend more toward the individual coins themselves. I seldomly purchase the commemorative 'sets' that the mint offers.

I'll probably spring for the uncirculated myself. I kind of like the rifles reverse although I think they could have done a little more with the design. I would have liked to have seen smaller lettering and then maybe added more to the design.
I'll wait untill the Star Spangled one comes out and get an unc of that one too.

I will probably end up getting both to add to my modern commem collection but I'll probably skip the dog tag thing.
